When buying gear which is more important to you? Speed/Funct

Me and a friend were having a discussion yesterday about diff samplers. And whatta u think? when buying gear what is more important to you, the speed or the function? Like do you emphasize speed and the abilty to get down thoughts fast? or do you like gear that takes you longer time to get ideas down but offer unique characteritcs that your looking for. Like say for instance 12bit samplers. to me I got a short attention span so i like my gear to be able to keep up wiht me and move real fast. I dont like having to take forver to loop something thne time stretch and chop it. I want that shit done in secs compared to say doing it on an older sampler. This is the sole reason im using reason, live, wavelab, and recycle and use my mpc to seq reason when i make all my programs.. It allows me to work real fast and get my ideas out quickly. What is your preference?

i havent used too many different types of equipment being that im an emcee.

but when i started gettin more and more into this, i wanted to something that allows me to flow easily.

this past week i have been gettin alot of good ideas out. thanks to you catz.

and i have to say if i had gear that was too complicated i would have serious creative block. (if that makes any sense).i rather spend my time being creative than battling with too many functions and features.

by flow i mean move fast and smooth. i dont like complicated gear at all. i have a short attention span myself when it comes to complicated gear.

I move slow as I like to think my beats and tracks through, I would go for function. Sometimes moving too quickly through production can create irreversible problems. Although getting your thoughts down before they abandon you is worthy of concern too.

im with bing 100%. no doubt its the speed and ergonomics of the gear that i look for. i like to bang out beats real quick, i cant sit there spending all that time editing samples and sh1t

I was trying out kontakt, and mach 5 for the last couple of weeks.


the software was taking 2-5 extra hand movements, compared to my mpc4000.

so, I switched back to the mpc


I do prodution tasks in marathon sessions.

I spend a few days, smoking weed, and sampling records into my computer.
I spend the next few days chopping samples in recycle, or dps quattro.


then When I am ready to make beats, all the time consuming BS is done, and I just get right in and make beats.



I am a weirdo though, and most people just find a sample and get to work.

I find, for myself, by the time I am done chopping,and asigning sounds, my creative flow is killed.


the quickest hardware machines, for chopping that I have used are, any ensoniq, and the mpc4000.

now, I understand the mpc2000 does a pretty good job though.

word i do the same thing. i put all my records with breakbeats in a pile and get to sampling them in like a period of 4 days. Then build libaries. That helps alot. I want to do it with basslines and other samples but that shit takes all day and im real lazy. I do save all my source files though so i need to spend some time going thru them and classifying them as what instrument they are. I also want to spend a while and just go thru all my hip hop records and pull verses out to have a library of hooks. But yeah this thread isnt about what u should go for, but just more of just what is your tastes.

i work in all kinds of different ways . if u sit there and get samples and chop make kits nd programs , i don't even wanna do the beat. samples to me are like find the illest one then make a banger with it. thats how i started instant gratifacation. but now years later it doesnt matter , its all in the preparation and then like a few days later u got mad ish to work with. another reason i copped some keyboards so i could turn them on and just make it pop off , cause looking for samples is ill , but i cannot really on that all the time. i need to have diversity
