Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By vexalism Sun Oct 26, 2003 7:53 pm
I got a Roland MC-505 and I am trying to play the sounds on the MC-505 and use them and record them on the MPC2000. I also am trying to use preloaded samples which are on my MPC2000 and use them on a sequence which would be already recorded from the MC-505. I am using the MPC's Receive In Terminal. And the Roland's Midi Out Terminal. I also have the midi/sync mode set to midi clock. And when I press the keys what happens is, the Roland MC-505 begins to play the preloaded samples from my MPC2000. When in actuality the reverse is supose to happen! Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Since it didn't work the the way i metioned in the last message. I tried reversing the cables prior to wrting in this forum. Sorry for not mentioning this.

Anyone Know The Problem?

You are desribing at least a couple of different and unrelated MPC oeprations. You need to fully describe a single issue, work it out, then move to the next issue.

Sequencing and Sampling are two mutually exclusive operations on the MPC. Which one are you needing to do first?

I am just trying to hear the roland sounds play through the midi cord on the MPC. And if they play I want them to be able to be recorded on the sequence i have drum sounds on. But all i am getting is the roland to play the sounds from the MPC. For some reason the roland is the controller when it is set to slave. The midi is hooked up correctly i think it might just be a setting.

Oh boy...there's your first problem.

MIDI does not transmit an audio signal. MIDI transmit data via a series of numbers. It let's devices with MIDI talk to each other. So you can't hear you 505 sounds coming through the MPC. But you'll be able to transfer "note events" information to the MPC. For example, if you have a kick pattern on the 505 on MIDI channel 1, you can send that informatioin to the MPC on MIDI channel 1, and whatever sound you have on the MPC on MIDI channel one or pad 1 for example, will play the pattern recorded on the 505, but not the sound on the 505.

Understand?

What if the 505 has an audio output along with the midi cable. Does this mean i can record sounds from the 505 onto the MPC sequence?

Think of Audio and MIDI as two seperate beasts. Don't even think about those two working together. Seperate the two for a moment. Clear your head of whatever you thought MIDI was and what you could with it.

First, I don't know exactly what you're trying to do. You keep saying record the 505 sounds into the MPC sequence. Don't understand that statement.

But, if you're trying to get the sounds from the 505 into the MPC, you'll have to sample them. Meaning you take an audio chord (1/4inch), plug it into the 505 output (not MIDI out), plug the other end into the MPC record in (not MIDI in). Read up on how to sample with MPC in your manual.

But when you're sampling, don't try and play a sequence from the 505, just manually hit the sounds you want to sample from the 505.

Now, if you're trying to "transfer" a sequence you did on the 505 to the MPC, then you'll be dealing with MIDI.

But you need to state exactly what you're trying to do.

I know what i'm tring to do I'm just having a hard time trying to explain it. Bear with me. I am trying to play the 505 sounds live on the MPC. I thought I could do it. I thought this because I have a cheap keyboard that hooks up through midi and plays the keys live on the 505. I thought since the MPC is a midi sequencer that it would enable me to use live sounds from an other source without recording them to a drum pad. I find it very hard to belive that i can use live sounds from my keyboard and use them on the 505 and not use the 505's sounds on the MPC, unless I record them to a drum pad. I hope thats clear enough.

And another thing. You stated before that midi only transmits binary. This technically means no sounds can be transmitted through the midi cable correct? But why when i hook up a midi cable to the 505's midi OUT into the MPC's midi IN 1; do i hear the MPC sounds on the 505? :?:

Because the 505 is sending signals to the MPC, lunchbox.

MPC midi out to 505 midi in.

Did you read the midi tutorial?

That makes sense. But the keyboard plays live sounds on the 505 through midi? I tried to read the midi tutorial but it seems to have been deleted from this site. Do you know of an active link?

And what about the sounds from the roland? They can only be recorded on the MPC pads and not recorded live? :?
