You can use the double time method with any sequencer. I mean just think about it...... If u can speed up the Tempo to like 200 than u can program in double time. and u can make any type of beat with the double time method. But u cant change the time signiture on every sequencer. I also have an asrxpro i used to use before getting my MPC and its very difficult to use the time signiture feature. But a also rarely use double time unless Im doing like a down south beat or something.

.....or you could just increase the grid resolution rather than the BPM's....same thing. For example, I'll program a beat at 74 (which would be, what, 148 double time?), and instead of having the grid set at 1/16, I'll set it to 1/32 (which, if you're mathmetically inclined, is effectively doubling the resolution). It does the same thing. If you need to, you could even adjust the metronome to ride at 1/32, so you get the fast count in....but 1/16 is usually fast enuff.

For you newbies out in the hizzouse, when your in the main sequence page, hit F1 (T.C.) and set that to "1/32"....leave the swing at 50%. Exit back to main screen. Then, hit F2 (Click) and make sure that your metronome is set to 1/16 (or 1/32, if you can hang.... 8) )

Holla...

This works fine if all your stuff is quantised to an even 1/16 or 1/32, but if you have a sample that you need to manually place in the STEP screen, doubling your resolution gives you twice as many ticks per beat. IE, The MPC breaks each beat down into 95 parts. If you double the tempo and play at normal speed, each beat now is broken down into 190 parts because the beat you hear is measured as 2 beats on the MPC.

If it takes 2 bars of programming at 180BPM to make it sound like 1 bar of 90BPM you basically use two beats of timing for evey one that you play. So you have twice as much "space" in the step mode to fit the same amount of samples.

And if anyone tries to tell me I can't hear a 1 tick difference on where a sample is placed, they're wrong. I usually only notice it when I'm trying to lay down a voice sample, but putting it only one tick ahead or behind makes it sound sloppy.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. THERE IS NO REASON TO NOT DOUBLE THE RESOLUTION. LEARN IT, USE IT, LIVE IT!!!!!!

If the resolution is low the image is less detailed, but if the resolution is high it's more detailed... Am I making sense....? :?

PEACE!

Good Sense!!

At no point do you slow the beat down again to hear a difference?

Or do you just keep it at that sped up tempo?

I ask, because, I'm trying it right now and it's making my samples sound fast as hell.

Peace.

Keep the TEMPO the SAME..... unless you want your beat slower...

double resolution, the tempo will actually be lower but will be doubled to increase the resolution. so 168 is not actually 168, its 84 @ doubled resolution..

Well it's a tip, and the quality of the information is very helpful, making it a good tip. Add to that fact that the tip is in direct reference to sequencing on an MPC, and it's easy to see why this is a Good MPC Sequencing Tip.

Hope that helps

Previous drum machines and older mpcs could only go up to 96ppq with the double tempo the resolution in a sense goes up. It`s a great tip.
