Live 4 - 10, I love this program.

ProTools - 8, can be a bit tricky, but it works just like it should and is a great multitracker.

Reason - 3, I know other people love this but I just don't like the way it works. Seems to have all the limitations of hardware built into something that you can't actually get hands on with.

Cubase - 5, It works OK, but I don't like the way it can't decide wether it's a sequencer or a multitracker.

Logic 7 - 2. Should be called "Illogic 7" This is way to menu driven and has too many layers, including lots of different ways to do the same thing.

Cycling 74 Mode plugins - 10, Everybody should have these, they are awesome.

These are jus my opinions on some of the software I use/have used, and chances are my opinion is going to be different to yours. Everybody should just use what works for them.

try using the controllers to mess with the attack, delay and other facets of a Subtractor or Maelstrom while the instrument is playing and recording your motions. i understand how one could think reason is limited, but the hands on approach of the controllers is something to try.

as for the cycling 74 mode plugins, i am curious. they are direct x, correct? i would love to get my hands on that.

one thing i seldom hear discussed is Cakewalk. i have never touched it, but i hear quiet good things about it.

I know some people like Reason, but to this day, I still can't figure out why. I loaded the program on my computer and went thru the tutorial and immediately thought, "Naw, this ain't for me."

It seemed very complicated and the music made in the tutorial was all done in a "step" recording manner with a mouse. Big turn off for me. Maybe if they made a tutorial showing how to use it in real time, I wouldn't be so turned off by it?

Anyway, that's my .02 on Reason. Yall can keep it.

Logic 5.3 (last version for PC) - 9, Just had to stand up for Logic...You can do anything you want with this program, it is a serious interface in places, but then it's meant for serious musicians.

Audiomulch - 8, It's $50 and you can jam to your heart's content and also make sounds do things they really shouldn't be able to do. Top software.

Soundforge - 8, Very good sample processing software. Million times better than Audacity.

Antonym -

I've played with Reason a bit with my X-Station as a controller, but it still doesn't do it for me. I know what you mean about changing attack times in realtime though, but then again I can tweak these things on my hardware synths, so I don't need reason.

Download the demo of the Mode plug-ins, they're pretty usable. I think they're available in all the major formats, but I'm a mac user so can't say for sure about Direct-X. Their website will tell you though. The full version is only US$100 for 5 of the best plug-ins I've ever used, I bought it after using the demo for about a week.

I used to use Cakewalk Pro Audio on my PC when I started getting into music, it was really great, the best thing I'd used up to that point. I imagine Sonar's good too, but it's PC only so I haven't used it since I've been getting more serious.

I know what you mean about logic having a serious interface for serious musicians, but it just seems like it's kept evolving for such a long time that it's gotten overly complicated. I know a few people who love it, but it seems to me that these people have been using it for a while and have only had a small learning curve with each update. Version 7 has two layers of menu bars, some of which have the same name!!?? I think it needs a clean sheet of paper re-design to simplify it, but then again that would piss off everybody that's gotten used to their way of using it. I'm not saying it's not great, but for my money I'd rather use Live for composition on the computer and ProTools for multitracking, rather than the all in one approach of Logic.

SF - 10 , Batch conversions, VST support, and a whole heap more.
