Hey yall Im doing a late night session. Hookin up some floor fillers ya know how we do it, right? Well anyway I always have the teevee on usually cartoons or sports center. Every once in a awhile I may have VH1soul or Mtv2 on with the sound on mute. Well I was was here and I noticed a Pharcyde video came on, it was the video to RUNNING (Circa 1995). In the video there is a scene where the boys are in living room doing a recording session and you can see them rockin' a SP1200 and an Akai MPC 60II! WOW!
I would see these guys around Los Angeles alot and never had clue they used an SP or MPC. I guess I should have known. Back then I had my Ensoniq so MPC stuff was way out of my league. :o

Yeah, the centre picture in the Labcabincalifornia booklet has a picture of the studio in which you can see the SP1200, MPC60, S950 and what looks like an ASR 10. Must have been real fun working on that album.

Not Hip Hop but Rita Marley's 1991 album had tracks done on the 60.

Sly Dunbar still has his I heard, and he used that a lot back in the day.

Also, Rubberoom's "Architechnology" (MPC-60 and ASR-10) and EC Illa's first LP was done on a 60 I believe (for those who follow Chicago hiphop beyond Kanye, Common, Da Brat, Crucial Conflict, etc).

Hell yeah, EC Illas is the shit.

I have that LP on CD, and I saved it to my Xbox. Everytime I play Tony Hawk, I bump "Devastate" and "What You Be About".

Yeah, you're right....on the EC Illa LP, on one of the tracks he says "13 seconds of sample time, and the 16 levels button...with some dope lyrics and fresh cuttin". sounds like a non-upgraded 60 to me.

I know Estero's 1st album "Breath From Another" had some 12bit action going on. That album was nice.

Her producer on that 1st album was DOC, he did all the stuff for RES too.

Word, that EC Illa is raw as ****. "Mating Ritual" has got to be my fave.

But I believe he also put out a couple of instrumental albums. As for the 60 proof:

lol, can u send me some jarre tracks using a 60...that sounds GREAT. the only drums ive heard from him are like drum sounds made on synths put into the sample and hold 2ce....

Jarere just used it as a sequencer. Vince clark once had a live show with a 60 and a bunch of cz-101's in a caterpillar or something. He was sponsored by casio for a while and recreated the album tracks with CZ sounds and analog drums in the 60.
