Nah, the SP-202 is cool. I like making more abstract stuff so it was fine for me... if you want to make Dr Dre style stuff with the drums all locked, etc then, of course, its not for you. But the 202 lets you be creative, VERY easily.
P.S Hope your trip to the USA goes well Jim!

i read on futuremusic that roland does not use the number 4 for anything due to its meaning with death.......just like this thread

Not sure why Tutor would allow this spam on the boards, since it is just that. Especially since it will eventually compete with his products:

More 404 sales = fewer MPC sales = fewer sold sample packs and fewer tutorials sold = less money in Tutors pocket

Where is he?

This is an MPC forum so I (hopefully others) will stick to the program. I'm enthusiastic about new gear like every other cat here but I get tired of hearing about when somebody posts "UH OH- Hammer Time" a new piece from Roland that either supposedly competes or is intended to send the MPC product line into oblivion. No flames here, BUT lets stick to the subject. I'm sure there's some place where we could all go 'hey ma, look what I found!'. I just feel this aint the place. Sure, EVERY brand under the sun gets repped here but the majority is how it complements/enhances the MPC. Just my .02, if you like it-buy it. Enjoy the rest of your day- I will.

And like I said b4 i think 404 will compliment the 1k very well. But whatever. if this is considered spam then close the thread game over, or move it to the off topic section.
peace

i dont see the harm in the thread. i think the 404 complements the mpc 1000 for some people. i think its just like putting up a link to a new roland or korg workstation...

"And like I said b4 i think 404 will compliment the 1k very well."

I do not understand that. In fact it is sounds pretty silly. Since when does another piece with it's own sequencer compliment an MPC? It's like saying "I think the MPC1000 compliments the MPC2000". What exactly is gained?

Gear that has overlapping functions does not integrate well or is not very efficient use of resources. I have more than one MPC and I do not connect them together thinking that they compliment each other. In order to use two similar pieces, one you have to split world across two machines (a headache) or put most of the work on one leaving a good part of the other unused (inefficient).

Akai had already made items like the 303, 404 many years ago called the S20 and Remix16 but decided to move away from the budget market. I have owned all of these budget boxes (and the Akai ones) and I eventually sold all of them. Nothing has really compared to the functionality, build and effectiveness of the MPC line. In 18 years Akai has only ever made 5 MPC's. Only one MPC ever superceded a previous model (MPC2000XL -> MPC2000). Akai Pro's determinate, methodical development cycle ensures a well thought out and lasting design. Akai does not pump out a new model every year rendering the previous years' model to the closeout bin. That does nothing but brutally punish your user base by telling them that the company does not care about existing users but would rather hook new users with new products.

the biggest thing gained is a rack of good effects that you can midi sync at a cheap price. i've seen plenty of people buy it just for that alone, never bothering with the sequencer or anything like that.

lofi/bit grunger, timestretch, reverbs, delay....all stuff that the 1k can't do, or can't do well, so if you don't have a computer these roland joints are a good cheap alternative.

"the biggest thing gained is a rack of good effects that you can midi sync at a cheap price."

There is hardly reason to pay hundreds of dollars for effects. You can buy effects units that are dedicated for that very purpose for a LOT less.

I do think it will complinment the mpc1k for myself that is. i can care less how good the sequencer is. I can see where your comin from 3000, but maybe for those ppl who will really use to sequence out there beats, but i'm not one of those ppl. I use the 1k to sequence anyways, plus I use Acid. i think the effects are awesome, plus the internal mic. i'm actually really lovin the internal mic, and battery power. i can record freestlye where ever, actually record any sound without having to worry about plugging somewhere, then freak it on the 404 with all of the effects. Like i said before i do think it compliments the 1k for myself, and thats that.

i dont understand why roland dont put midi out on these boxes- so annoying. it would be cool to record your sequences you made on it into the mpc. what if u come up with some thing good on it. you have to sample the whole"pattern" in the mpc as a wave? wat a gype off. god i wish my roland jx still worked man the new stuff just sucks. and why did they not put the cool pad on the v synth on the rackmount version? idiots.
