I am now using a couple things for monitoring. Each with a different purpose.
I use
M-Audio DX4's almost exclusively for my computer now. They are small and have a flat response. Perfect for editing and such on the pc. Since I use the 1k I most definitely have to dabble in using software once in awhile. I also use them for mixing because of the flat response, and when they are right in front of your face you don't need em loud at all. You hear all the imaging the speakers are capable of in a small space since they are so small.
I have a
Kenwood XD-A8 mini system that I use when I'm making beats, because it gives me big sound. Each speaker has a 8 inch sub on the side and it has a separate amp dedicated to pumping out the lows to them. The system also has a feature called "Source Direct" which lets you hear the the sound without any frequency attenuation. I've compared it to a couple pairs of monitors, and actually in this mode the sound is very flat and transparent. It actually does sound like a set of monitors. Also the subs are completely adjustable, I can even turn them off completely, so I can hear the sound without all the extra bass.
The funny thing is I had this system for years, and didn't realize that with the "Source Direct" mode turned on it actually is very comparable to very decent monitors after I had a few of them in the crib to compare em to. I bought a pair of monitor stands for the speakers and got long speaker wire so I have em on either side of the room positioned right at head level when I sit down. They work great and they really pump loud. I wish I was using this for monitoring all along instead of the really bad Gemini computer type speakers I was using before.
And Lastly, I just recieved these today. These sound really great. Flat response, nice separation. Everything is detailed perfectly. The
Sony MDR-7509 headphones. I bought these for detailed listening, mixing, and as another reference. I also got these for monitors when doing vocals. Very dope headphones. Probably the best sounding headphones I've ever heard. The whole frequency range really comes through on these. Since the headphone cup covers your whole ear it's easy to get lost in sound, which I like. I thought since these headphones have a bigger driver to power they won't be loud. I was wrong. These headphones are extrememly loud, and they don't distort even at very high levels. I love these.
