I don't see why you would get another MPC just for "the lab."
If you were trying to go portable, maybe you'd get the 1000 cause it's small, but just for the studio I don't see any reason.

I guess there would be more use in getting the 60 because it has a slightly different sound....

........but I bet you could spend that money on some other gear that you probably need more (considering you already have an XL.)

Yep, there really is no strong reason to buy the MPC1000 as an additional MPC - everyone talks about it's portability, but since when has an MPC2000XL not been portable?

Feature-wise, I dont see how a 1000 can really supplement an existing MPC2000XL set up - it's really designed to be used instead of a 2000xl (IMO).

Out of interest, why do you feel you need an extra MPC?

An MPC60 will give you a different sound, so I can see why you'd want that in addition to an MPC2000xl, but you could also consider an Akai S950 or Emu SP12 for that feature.

thanx for helping guys

basically i have been hearing a lot of good stuff about the 60 and i have been having problems gettin the sounds i want out of my 2000xl. but i dont wanna just sell the 2000 to get a 60 because it is pretty much brand new and i am the only user. And from what i hear the 60 seems to have the grimy sound that i am looking for. I def. hear what u guys are saying about he 1000 tho. But i kind of wanna try out the 60.

If it's just the sound you're after, I'd look at an S950 as they are pretty cheap these days.

Tutor summed it up, unless your after the 60s swing, the s950 is the best bang for your buck, Im almost entirley running my sounds out of the s950 with sub beat chops and sequencing done on the 60, and IMO the s950 sounds slightly better (fuller) than the 60 plus it has nice filters.

so what would be the best sampler for me to buy? s950, sp12, or the s3000xl

Not the S3000xl. It's 16bit 44.1k. It'll sound pretty much exactly like the MPC2000xl.
I think the 950 has more sampling time than a SP12 (don't quote me.)

Out of the choices you gave... I vote for the SP12. I love the sound of the older Emu products. The s950 will probably sound closer to how the MPC60 sounds. It wont sound identical to it though. Plus you have to use floppies.... :( If you want the MPC60 sound then get a MPC60. Its all subjective though...

A good piece to use in conjunction with the 60 is the ASR-X. The idea of course is to use the 60 for drums and sequencing. (1.5 mb is plenty for drums @ 12 bit) Use the X for sampling. (The Pro version has 66mb sample time) Its easy to chop samples with the X. Easier than the MPC products. The sequencer on it cant compare to the MPC. This would of course mean you would probably have to sell the 2000XL. You would have some change leftover from the sale to buy another toy though...lol. Maybe a bigger mixer to handle the monsterous 16 outputs you will have? 8) Maybe an analog filter for the 60? Maybe...some vinyl to sample from? This combo would give you 12 bit, 16 bit, Linn sequencing, more outputs and much more sample time. Most of all though, with the filters and efx on the X combined with its resampling feature you have the ability to be much more creative and expressive right from the jump.

Anyway... I just thought I would step in and give you even more to think about....If your head explodes because you simply cant decide, then my job is done here.

Ladies and Gents I will be here all week.......Please tip the bartender on the way out..... *drum roll* :P
