My Zips drives keep dying

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. Your info has been very helpful.

From what I've heard in the past and from what everyone here has said, I think it's the fuse that's bad. I even called a place up in Pasadena (authorized Akai service cent from Akai's web site) and talked to the dude there. He said the same thing.

I know how to use a soldering iron and am somewhat skilled with electronics, but this is my baby and I haven't done any work like this in a looooooong time. So I guess I'll just pay these dudes in Pasadena to fix it for me. They said it should run me about $75. I know the fuse is like a buck, but labor is a ****.

Anyone think I shouldn't go to these guys to fix my baby?

just go , the time and energy and cash to go elsewhere will probably cost more...get it out the way and get to making beats!

Also make sure you have good memory sticks in your MPC. It could be a memory problem with the freezing up. Make sure u don't have mis-matched memory installed.

When my fuse blew I called 2 diff't AKAI service centers. One was all to happy to take a look at it. Theother told me there is actually NO SCSI FUSE but it's actually a chip of some sort than can bure out. He also said to make sure its my SCSI chip/fuse by trying onther SCSI devices and he was right. I unhooked my zip, disconected all the cables, hooked it back up and everything's fine now. If you didn't disconnect or connect SCSI devices with the MPC powered on, then you shouldn't have damaged the fuse, it's proly the drive.

M.ic P.ro C.rusher is right, this isn't a fuse like those glass fuses or like you might have in your car. It is some sort of chip (I have heard it referred to as a "fuseable link") and it would need to be soldered in. It generally only blows if you connect or disconnect your drive while the power is on.

If you don't think you connected/disconnected the SCSI cable while the power on the MPC was on, then maybe this isn't the problem. On the other hand, if you know you connected/disconnected while the power was on, you should take the unit to VST.

In either case you should double check everything first. It won't hurt to get another drive and SCSI cable and give it a try. Everyone agrees, if your using Zip drives, its good to have an extra.

i had the same problem, i went thru like 4 zip drives that didn't work but had no click of death on them.

later i figured out it was the actual scsi cable i was using was bad...

try to switch them up if you have them. it was weird out of the 4 drives i had, 2 of the cables were no good and all the drives work now with a good cable. try to mess with 'em, it's a possibility.

im having the same problem many folks here have had. Just all of a sudden I pop a disk in to load some sounds I just put on the disk and -Boom- i get an "SCSI read Error"

Since it never left the save/load screen...
the hot beat I was working on? Gone
The sounds and projects on the disk? Gone

I tried ALL of my zip disks in this drive. EVERY disk I get the same Error message. I even tried formatting the disks in the computer AND the mpc. Im gonna go crazy real soon. So my question is, if the fuse IS blown (if thats my problem) how do I go about fixin the problem? I have to ship my mpc somewhere to have it fixed?

Also, im now interested in installing a Card Reader. There is external card readers right? if not, where would I go to get one installed. Thanks for the help if anyone is able to...

I used to praise Zip drives/disks so much. But now I need something different. Cant loose any more work.
