Any wa to repair scratched records?

Just copped this record - a gem, a rare gem, but I come home and discover its more scratched up than I thought - its skipping...is there any way/methods/produc to repair it (i know its a long shot!)

There's a way to fix a skip or two......but not if the whole disc is skipping.
And this is ONLY a last resort:

Put an old needle that you don't use anymore on your turntable cartridge. (this will thrash your needle, so don't use a good one)

Figure out exactly where in the song the skip is.

Play the record, and right before the skip starts, take a finger and *carefully* push down on the headshell WITHOUT knocking the needle out of the groove.
Apply enough pressure to force the needle to stay in the groove even through the skipping part. You may need to slowly move your finger toward the center of the record along with the needle's natural movement.

If the record skips during this process, start over, and apply more pressure so that the record "can't" skip. Force the needle to stay in the groove.

After you're through the skip part, go back and try to play the same part without your finger, and see if it still skips.

Often this process will 'carve' the groove back into place so that it doesn't skip anymore. It may cause some noise.....but that may be better than a skip. That's for you to decide.

Just be aware that this process can thrash your needle and your record, so only do it as a last resort....and use an old needle! (at your own risk)


**Before you try anything this drastic, clean your record really good, because sometimes dirt or sticky junk on the record can cause skipping.

Sometimes a load pop on the vinyl will actually be a large particle of dust that is stuck in the groove. Similar to the method above, look closely at the stylus as it plays on the area where the sound is & you should be able to see if there is something lodged in the groove. Carefully using the edge of a fingernail might dislodge it. Otherwise applying some cleaner like isopropryl alchohol directly on the spot might help dissolve it.

My dad told me he used to have some sticky glue shit that you put on top of the record and let it sit there for a while. When it hardened, he would take it off and all the dust and particles stuck in the grooves would come right out. I forgot what it's called though.
