does anyone?

i was watching mtv, and they had a special for that new movie Hustle and Flow, and they were talking to the guy who produces for 3-6 mafia, about the "memphis" sound, my question isn't about that sound, but the way he demonstrated his beat programming, he started off with the hi-hat on note repeat, then did the bass drum, and when it looped back around added his snare, now i usually do bass drum and snare, hand clap whatever in the same run through, does anyone do it the other way in separate run throughs, and if so what's the reasoning behind it, i tried programming as other dude did, but it seemed strange to me, but i have to say he layed down a tight drum track in less than 30 seconds, using that technique.

I always lay my snares first on track one.
Then I lay my kicks on track two.
Then I go back to track one anf f@ck wit the snares so they fit the kicks better
Then I add hi-hats on track 3 over the kick and snares.
Then after the melodies are added, I go back t the drums again, and make them work and play well with whatever samples I've used.

I lay everything separate, on separate tracks and at separate times. Some say it puts my creativity on "pause" while I do that but I find it helps analyze what I'm doing and where I'm going with it.

There's no rules when it come to making a song. Try whatever work for you.

He is comfortable making tracks like that so that's him.

You do you, you said it felt weird when you tried it, so maybe it's not for you or you put your own twist on it so that it becomes you.

I have to say though when I put the hi hat first I am able to make better tracks. I like how the hi hat create a sort of flow before even putting down the drums and the snare.

That's what I mean, try it all, it might be some part of it that you like and some that you don't, use the parts that you like and maybe you can come up with another production technique to add on to what you already do.

I try ALMOST everything I read at least once, to see what's up with it.

well i like to do the hihats first. it kinda sets the foundation for the other drums. kinda keeps me on beat better then the metronome sometimes. you can always go back and change them if need be...

First of all I lay my drums first when I making a beat n I never consicously lay kicks, snares, hi-hat in any order I can lay anyone of them first cuz either way I can make that head noddin groove maybe that's my technique just knowin what I wanna do

Yeah a real drummer do but we're talkin mpc not drumkits so we're talkin order after all we do are meshing sound n layerin on top of each other so order is da topic

what i do is rec everything on one track without quantze to get that real
authentic feel. after that, i copy the track like 3 times and delete the other
instruments on every track. some more work but it's the way i digg to do it.
