Hell yeah, if you liked that old Suave House sound. They used the fu*k out of the Planet Phatt module. It's a good sound module. the sample quality is exceptional. It doesn't have the tweaing knobs like the Mo Phatt but it's still tweakable and the presets aren't repetitive like some modules. If you're looking for some bass patches, definately what you'd like.

Yeah its pretty bad, was the first thing I bought for beats back in high school. I have a question of my own... I just finally got the MPC a couple weeks ago after being forced to put it off for so long, and wondering can you take whole patterns off the Phatt into the MPC by midi and just tweak from there? I'd imagine if you know how, it would be a little easier than the way of editing with the keyboard attached to the Phatt

Actually the Plaanet phatt has a better sound bank compared to the Mo Phatt. I can say this because I have both. Obviously as technology progresses it's going to be better than it's previous version or somewhat upgraded. In this case the sample quality is more charged, meaning they put more emphassis on the samples quality in this module The Mo' Phatt. The Planet Phatt can be tweaked up to via internal filters. It just takes longer than the Mo Phatt. the Mo Phatt has tweak knobs on it modules exterior, the Planet Phatt' s are accessed via menus. Mullethead doesn't have one and has never heard the real thing. the post he was referring to probably related to soundfonts. Trust me I bet you'd have a harder time getting a Planet Phatt as opposed to getting rid of one. As for the question about the MPC tweaking the sounds from the Planet Phatt module. the MPC can only tweak internal sounds/sampled in.

the phatt modules can respond to midi control changes for tweeking which the mpc can send. Also, the soundmodules are just fancy soundfont players, ask the tutor, he posted in a thread about it.

In reality I can feel that discription about sound modules being soundfont players, however how about the soundfont lay outs. I mean as far as the key/chord ranges are mapped out?

its da same, tutors point was spot on, how do you think they get all dem sounds into 32MB? they use soundfonts, the main diff being: the hardware used to play it back. I wouldnt use a Creative card to plpay SF, but I use the EMu APS to do it.

THe layout is the same and actually, if you want you can use vienna to make your own sf with the sounds from the modules cd's just like programming a patch on any other keyboard.

i know a lil' about what yall are talkin' about. would some consider giving me a more in depth explanation of sound fonts and the pros/cons of buying a cd vs teh pros/cons of getting an actual module? HELP! the only module i have right now is the proteus 2000.

I ain't no software designer or sound developer for that matter however I do have my opinions based on my personal experiences. As for the soundfonts portion of your question all I can tell you is like foo stated they are used everyday in multiples of modules and keyboards. Obviously, however, where as with soundfonts you will have to program those into positions, so I believe. Whereas with modules someone else has already programed the key ranges layout for you. Soundfonts are generally used in the software realm. Modules are transportable. Not every studio in the hood is capable of playing back soundfonts. Now I can't recall speciffically but I do believe your Proteus has two more expansion slots which you can install two more expansion roms. If you choose so you can sample and tweak your Proteus sounds externally or you can tweak them via the filters on your module. I don't want to sound one sided so I'll ket someone else step in.

yo,Ocean...... or anyone on this thread !

I have a 4000 and my crazy question( pardon my ignorance ) is if I get a planet phat... Can I hook it up to the mpc 4000 without a keyboard, and use the internal key group to spread one bass sound over the diffrenent notes...

bottom line I am kind of in the same boat. I want bass lines in my songs and diffrent sounds. do I need a midi key board to use the key group...

I don't want to spend the money on a trition for the sounds if I can get something else cheaper.

thanks, hope this makes sense

No you don't need a keyboard. It's better to have a keyborard, a full sized 88 keys. Why, the MPC only has 64 pads wheras 88keys gives you a longer range. I would advise you to pick up a Studiologic midi controller. This way whatever midi device/module or modules you accquire in the future you can controll them all from that one keyboard. This also includes the MPC. Whichever route you take, the MPC can control your modules as well.

P.S. I forgot to mention that you won't be able to sample the planet phatt sounds into the MPC without another midi controller. Using only your 4000 you'll just have to play out your bass parts. Editing your Planet Phatt sounds are done onboard.

88 keys is a waste of space unless you're a piano player.

get 61 keys max and transpose.
