Looking for a keyboard...

Looking for a keyboard companion for my 2kXL....

1. ASR 10 - excellent sampler apparently, and nice keyboard sounds, however i dont really need another sampler, and they are pretty hard to come by nowadays {especially with a $200 shipping tag to my country}

2. Yamaha Motif - never used one, more expensive, but newer, dont really know much about these

3. Korg Triton - never used one, ive heard a lot of beats with their utilisation, still not really sure if its what i want

Any other things i could look at? I'm really after a keyboard for the creativity {used to play keys as a young lad }

Korg's Karma is pretty cool..it has the Triton Sound Set and the Karma feature which is really just a fancy arpagiator with some real time controls and some randomness thrown in for flavor. There's more than 1500 Arp's in the thing...
Downside...keyboard action is a bit plasticy...

What about the FANTOM!

saving your money and get reason 3.0 ,sample the sound from it into your mpc and hit the 16 level

If he were gonna do that why buy reason?

..to be honest I would cop the cheapest most effective 61 or 76 key plain midi controller keyboard possible. It's like you said you don't really need the additional functionality of an ASR-10 so Fantom, Triton, etc. would be the same. For way less money you could get a plain controller and then cop some used modules, like the old Emu series, Roland XV's, or soft synths.

Also finally tried out a Triton, and I really dont know why people rate this machine. It seems cheap and restricting, the sounds are the 'same old' really, nothing new that I could find - the basses were nice and orchestral sounded good, but for under $2k i reckon i could do better second hand.

Tried a couple of modules - they were ok, the only thing puttin me off is the fact I have to buy a controller too - the nice ones are expensive and the modules alone are EXTORTION!

L. Tombstone, yeh I really want a keyboard that incorporates everything, so i'm not mucking around with modules all the time, then again I suppose buying modules will give me heaps of variety....

I dunno, i suppose im just expecting too much from a keyboard, I've already got Reason, and its good, but there is absolutely no way i'm going to include my computer in my studio, aside from recording and a little EQ'ing - If so i'd be looking at a Mac or something, theres no way i'm gonna let Microsoft fluck everything up -

essko u have a lot of research to do about using pc's for music. your quote would hold true 5 years ago, but the computer game changes every month. the truth is any sound module will enable u to make beats. no sound module is going to make a beat for u. i have had my triton for 3 years and the thing still amazes me, but i also feel that if i had a motif or any other keyboard as my main one that i could still produce heaters. the first question is do u know how to play a keyboard? 2nd do u know how to make or edit sounds with a keyboard?

I understand that there are very powerfull PCs out there now, thing is, I have a budget, and I'd rather spend that on a decent peice of MIDI gear that wont crash and just do its job, than go and buy the latest a*ss box computer with the fastest processor, hundreds of gigs of RAM and biggest harddrive. And I'd rather leave Linux to the buffs, thanks.
My computer is fine, it holds my Soundbank and records my music and lets me watch porn. Thats all I need it for. So I'd like to buy a peice of gear which will go with my MPC, and give me some variety in my productions.
I realise that the sound module will not make beats for me, thats why I bought my MPC in the first place.

In my younger days, I played the piano for 4 years, before retiring and starting the guitar. Then I played a Rhodes Scholar and another Yamaha keyboard in a band later on, now to realise that keys are a fundamental part in composition and creativity because of the way you play them -

I dont know how to make or edit sounds with a keyboard yet, but if I had one I would learn. I didnt know how to use an MPC 2000 XL before I bought one, I hadnt even set hands on one before, but I learnt - I see what you mean here, however with the Triton, there was nothing that jumped out at me in the way of sample uniqueness. Sure, I saw there was some editing and envelope controls on the thing, maybe I needed to play around with them more before I made my decision, but first impressions last - until proven otherwise.

Any other ideas ??

i am thinking about getting a motif es rack. i tried the original motif, byt had a lot of the sounds already in my other yamaha module. so i will test it for a week and then let u know

I wouldn't try using a module without a keyboard controller, playing it with pads just isn't the same. You should check out the Alesis Ion if you want something a bit different, it's awesome. Everybody and their dog has a fantom/triton/motif, that's why their music all has that sameness. If you decided you wanted a rompler later on you could add a module.

Or, see if you can find a second hand Kawai K5000, should be around $600-$700 NZ, can do all your string/piano/blah blah rompler sounds but also has some crazy additive synthesis possibilities.

Buy a ASR-10, get some triton,motif, whatever samples. its less money, you can filter out all the bullsh1t sounds, and the ASR sounds way harder than the motif, triton imo.

yea but youll be less flexible, no ribbon controller, or pitch modulator.
