a lot of studios have every mpc for clients. Also some people buy gear for when they always have to work with someone who request specific gear.

If you read that article, Dre only uses 5 MPCs because he can't be bothered to switch zip disks when he wants to load a new sound.

Must be nice to have that kind of dough.

I agree. I think this may have something to do with timing. R. Kelly doesn't use many sampled loops. I'm curious to know more about it.

you are exactly right, someone in the industry uses up to 8 though, im not sure exactly who... but here is an exact quote from Dre's article

"Can you talk a bit about some of the equipment you use?

I love using the MPC3000. I like setting up like four or five different MPC3000’s, so I don’t have to keep changing disks. So I have them all lined up, and I have different drum sounds in each one, and then we use one for sequencing the keyboard. "

here is the exact Scratch interview, check it out....for all the rookies that dont understanding the use of your whole arsenal of sounds

BassLINE wrote:Damn, 8 MPC's. That sounds redundant to me. I don't think those guys heard of midi outs. I mean, look at the MPC60/3000/4000. They have 4 midi outs. That means that they can control 4X16 channels = 64 midi devices with one MPC.

So why would you need more than one MPC? I'd be interested to know how that works.

most peeps use their MPC for their Samples and Drums... and not to Control other Devices.... your MPC can only hold 256 sounds, u are very limited, and slowed down trying to think and put all the sounds u need in a program, that limits your production a lot and slows you down

I figured people preferred MPC's because of their incredible sequencing and ability to control other devices. I mean, if you're not going to use them for what they're best at then you should seek out cheaper alternatives to play back samples right? I still can't think of anytime where I've needed even 32 samples (2 banks) much less 256. I guess my style is more stripped down. I also organize my shit so I don't have unnecessary sounds in a program. One program per track.

I still can't see how you can justify more than one MPC in sequencing. That Dre example only proved that most people are just lazy rather than actually NEEDING more than one MPC. Can't be bothered to change disks? WTF?

Must be nice to have money to burn like that.

dude... check this out, MPC's load slowwwww.... verrrryyyy slowwwww, so that will slow down his production time, or anyone elses for that matter that needs to access all of their programs or sounds, and actually, if you think only using MPC for MIDI only, then u gotta be sick... u missing out on a lot more, yeah, u can use other things, but why when ya MPC can do that too, and u can fatten sounds, anyway, thats another topic.... but anyway, thats of topic, the main thing is, if u can only use 256 sounds, and u need access to all of yours samples, which me personally, i have over 10 Gigs of sounds for my MPC, most which i still havent even heard all of, and im sure some are the same, or somewhat similar...but its not lazy to be rushing, its lazy when u wanna sit around and wait, when u can be making more music, and much more dough, by a lil investment... a couple of MPC's, ok yea, the cost might be right around $10,000... versus making tracks that could end up making you 5 times the amount plus more... ya gotta think... but then again, your production style maybe different, so i cant be mad at ya for doing what you do, people use different methods, maybe u using your exact Motif of Triton Drums works for you, if so, much propz

The 2 MPC trick - I use two MPC 4ks...One in the studio and one in storage for when the d**n thing goes down. Nothing hurts a session more than to be without your sequencer. For the same reason, I have 3 mixers (o2r's) Two are always in use and one is either in storage or out for repair.

Yeah, I have two XL's...but one is strictly for backup on tour. If the shtt goes bad on stage, it's not like you can just borrow one from the other band like guitar strings.
I've needed it too. A whole row of pads went bad on me once during a rehearsal the day before a show.

Ha ha ha, naw I don't mess with Motif/Triton drums. I rock the MPC60 so I know the loading time isn't the fastest with SCSI but it's not like you have to sit there for half an hour waiting for samples to load. What's more is that the 3000 is a bit faster so it shouldn't be as bad. I mean if he needs faster loading times why not rock a 4000 or something?

Anyway, like I said, organization is important, it can help you save more time than you can imagine.

But, no doubt, I'm not a legendary producer nor do I do this professionally so I guess I'm just not on that level of understanding. I like to keep things really simple.

look an mpc4000 give you access to 96 sounds at onetime, plus whatever modules or keyboards you use and can sequence, whats the purpose for 2&3 mps? some folks can't even work the little stuff they have now, give me a break.
