MPC60, 60II and S950, same sound engines??

Sorry, hate to bring it up because it is by no means a NEW TOPIC, but I have been thinking about scoopin up a 60 or 60II in the near future. Only drawback for me is, I already got a 2K classic and a 3000. So economically the S950 would be a more practical option. Are the sound engines the same? Or different sound engines derived from the same basic design>>meaning do they really sound the same or not?? Or do even the 60 and 60II sound different??

The issue here really is the 12-bit resolution on the 60, 60II and S950. I just want to add a 12-bit machine to my rig mainly for drums, kicks and snares really and I'm not into cheap subsitutes like down grading the resolution in some software or something. SP1200 - too expensive, 60 and 60II - affordable for the quality, but I got two MPC's already. S950 - just saw one on Ebay for $195!! I'd sell sum'n off, but all my gear got a niche in my setup. Now I'll buy a 60 or 60II if I have to because I have heard records make with them and know the advantages, but what would be the BEST option. Any input is appreciated, sorry for the redundant topic especially with all the 12-bit 60 talk as of late...oh and I did a search but didn't find anything that covered it.

Kill every bird with one stone and get the S950. It's better because it sounds similar (to the 60, though the 60 sound isn't THAT special as say an SP1200) as well as allowing for adjustable sample rates and filtering.

No need for another MPC as you already have 1 too many. The 60 and 60II are EXACTLY the same except for the plastic casing, headphone jack and lack of arm rest on the II.

But no question, buy the S950 and call it a day. You can't lose there.

just buy a ill compressor like a DBX160 or a 160a, and run your drums from that using a AUX on your board and then EQ them so more on your mixer.

^^^...are you saying just process the output from my 3000 to sound more robust instead of worrying about copping another machine?? I got a Avalon 737SP already, but I don't like compressing my drums all that much. I'm kind of a picky cat, so I don't use drum sounds that ain't crackin off top. I've just read so many good words about the benefits of 12-bit samplers or the sound anyway, I guess I kinda got sucked into the concept. Man, easy for you to say, looks like you got the the whole 'Masters of 12-bit' family!!! well if you don't like compression...you should just sell your 3k and grab a maxed 60 and a expanded S950. You could easily get both with the price you would be getting for the 3k. I just sent my 3k off, kept my 60 & S950 and got me a SP.

not to shiish on any parades but a good comp isnt a sustitute if you want 12bit sound. it is a good tool no matter what bit rate you sample at. id say get a 950 if all you want is 12bit. i run 12bit samplers from a 3k all the time its nice specially if you want it jst for drums. s950s have a filter no filter in a 60. dont worry about another mpc if you got two. youll be real happy with s950

950 and call it a day, I cosign Baseline's comments, you do have 1 too many mpc's!

The consensus is right, 950 and youre in biz. Its like the sound of the 60 on steroids. It allows for more character for the samples because of the options you have to manipulate your sounds. For me it takes about 2x as long to set up my samples to make a beat as the 60 but it's worth it as far as richness you get from the 12bit filters and bandwidth settings.

Definitely not the same punch (though they do have it). They're different beasts altogether. Check this little comparison curteousy of http://www.hiphopproduction.com. It's between the S950 and the SP1200.

Sell the 2k. Take the cash, buy an S950. Keep the 3k. Call it a day.

Thanks for all the replies yall!! Looks like the S950 is a good option. I appreciate all the feedback and info. Yeah, I'd 86 the 2000 but I got too much music to transfer out of that machine. Plus, I dumped too much cash into it to take that kinda loss. The 3000 was a lucky come up via a homie gotta keep that piece...it's too clean too. BTW, I was @ Guitar Center in S.F. the other day, they had a 3000 classic in a glass case selling for....$2,200.00!!! About a thousand too much in my book. They had some corny phrase on the sign too like 'CLASSIC GEAR'!!! HA HA...they were askin only $1,800 at the San Jose store a year or two back.

I may own one MPC too many, but it wasn't written into the plans just happened that way. I seen Elmac ride a couple cats for mulitple MPC violations....well, one day I too will command 5 3000's at a time like Dre........

No doubt, just having a little fun wit it myself! I wouldn't buy mo MPC's to hog 'em, spread the love would be more along the lines of my thinking. Good looks Perp.noob, what's good wit cha??
