Pro Tools (PC Users)

Is it possible to run Pro Tools LE on a PC, if so what are the draw backs, considering ample RAM (512) and Processor (1.7ghx) are in use. I'm not too sure if this is straight, would an extra PCI card be required?

i have no problems, but i never used a mac either. make sure you have a seperate harddrive for your music and you should be good. its good to have a computer dedicated to music only.

short answer......yes.......BUT.............

Pro Tools hardware/software is very picky about the components that are connected to it so if your pc has a motherboard or processor, etc. that PT doesn't "agree" with then your PT experience will be a bad one

u need a faster processor, something like 2.0GHZ, i think, check that compatibility chart that DDot posted, and definitely get another Hard Drive

Intel Pentium 4 or Xeon CPUs running at 2.0 GHz (or faster)
AMD AthlonXP 2000+ CPUs (or faster)

1.7 will run PT fine, you probably wont get a high track/plug count but it will get the job done. You should be able to run 24 track sessions fine with that(Ive done it with 1st generation p4's with slower processors)

also, digi's compatibility chart isn't as informative as the digi user forum "best desktop" thread is. The compatibility list is just a list of tested pc's that digi techs have tested for performance with digi stuff, the pc's in the list will not yield the best performance.

if you purchase it locally, your dealer will probably tell you to go with the suggested specs, if not, all the problems you may get, thats going to be the first thing they tell you is the problem, even if it isnt... even Digidesign, with their limited tech support for so long after you make the purchase, if you have any problems, thats what they will most likely tell you is probably the suggested problem, so, you be the judge, go with whats suggested from the company, or someone else....you got the specs list

...and if your comp is deemed incompatible, then just get an M-Audio interface and Pro Tools M-powered.

If all else fails......bleh......just run Cubase SX. You'll be alright.

Im running PT (Digi 002) on this set up that I built in march.

AMD A64 3500+ (only 2.2ghz but due to the design it does more work per clock cycle then P4's at the same speed. Hence the low clock)

It was built primarily for gaming as I wasnt tracking my beats into the comp till recently. But it runs PT like clockwork and I havent had a performance problem yet.

works fine

thanks alot, appreciate all the info ......my comp seems like it can handle and i have made a few phone calls to Dell confirming specs, now its jsut the purchase ...... or look for a compatible interface to run SX or Sonar
