I can usually get the drums I want with the 1k's timing. I usually do....
Kicks and Snares: 16ths with 62 swing
Hats: 16ths with 58 swing
Samples: 32 triplets or 16ths with 50 swing.
For other things that I just drop in through out the beat: Freehand no quantzing. :D

i think youre just trying to start a bit-rate war again!

jk... anyways, i think a 1k and a 60 is definitely overkill... but to control another sampler or something, id go with the 60, but you already know why  if you do go for a 60, try and get one thats already upgraded OS/MEMORY/SCSI, cuz that chits a lot of cash to upgrade yourself...

ppqns are important, but it doesn't determine how the sequencer places the notes at all. Binger I think you should try another MPC and program one shots to find out what I'm talking about. If timing really depended on ppqns the SP 303 should have the exact same timing as the MPC but it does not does it. Note placement doesn't really matter when you do loop based material because everything in your track is set to a certain BPM and you just gotta make sure the chops are placed in the sequence exactly how you chopped/sliced them. The funny thing is that even if you program drums with TC off and you got that ish spot on...the sequencer still has a way of playing it back different...rigid.

My timing is poor I admit that. But when I sit there and play out kicks in one track, snares in another, hats in another and focus on the timing instead of playing them all at once...my timing is pretty decent. I'll experiment more with the timing though regardless. I could do everything in step edit and do everything precise to the tick even the naturallness of having things on a slightly different time, but that really defeats the purpose of having pads and a hardware sequencer. I do want something that I can play and not have to spend hours re-arranging because of how the sequencer places the notes. Out of the 3 MPC's I played with the 60 comes closest to the kind of note placement I want. The 4k is better. 1k is too rigid.

It's not like I'm the only one whose noticed:

thats a great idea get the 60 and control the sampler in the one thou. bangin idea. youre a genious. its good to see you like the sound of a 1k over the sound of a 60.

the 1k sampler sounds alright to me, but its just straight stupid to use a 60 to control it

id go with the 60 + racksampler advice and get rid of the 1k.

I hear ya'll. You know there are a lot of cats out there that rock two MPC's midi'ed together. Shadow was one of em. He had 2 of THE SAME KIND at that.

I was thinking along these lines because I like MPC's. Don't have any experience with racks. Racks seem like a headache too. Just exploring options people. So chill with that "stupid" talk. AIGHT?

There's nothing stupid about it. Plus I could still use the 60 just for drums and the 1k for everything else. I don't mind using the sampler on the 1k because I don't need anything much more complicated than that. I'd only pick up a 60 if I found it for a VERY good price. Or an ASQ 10 as I mentioned which is quite a bit cheaper than a 60.

Besides I was thinking flowers it, and just working with a 2xl and DPS and that's it. That's everything that's needed right there.

I just get annoyed when cats get all uppity when you are trying to explore all the possibilities. A 60 and a rack is a no brainer. That was the most obvious choice. But I wanted to explore something different for the time being. That's why I didn't start a redundant thread about 60's and 950's. Even if I decided to get a 60 to control the 1k. If it works for me and I'm happy with that set-up and happy with the results...that's all that matters anyway.

From what I understood your plan was to control the mpc 1000 sampler via midi tracks on the 60.... Syncing 2 mpcs together is something different. Rocking two mpcs like shadow, for example, is a simple work around since a mpc3000 which he uses can only run 1 program at a time and therfore "only" has 4 banks of pads (256 sounds at a time). In an interview (I think it was remix mag) he stated he constantly would be running out of pads working on his more complex tracks. Dre however does similar but for different reasons. He basicly is LAZY and just doesnt like reloading new drums :)

Perhaps I misunderstood you and you just want best of both worlds by syncing a classic unit to a modern unit with great new functions. Thus being able to choose or mix styles anytime. Ain't nothing wrong with that!
But if that's your plan I'd go straight s950 for basses and drums - a rack wont hurt you man. Its prob just something you've never used or worked with for a longer period and due to that dislike the idea (perhaps you feel not exclusive enough, since this has been done since ages ->think pete rock sp/950, think primo 60/950/). Honestly If you want to try something new for you, I'd do that. Doesn't need to be NEW to the world to make music that doesnt sound like the others. Thats what your brain does, not a piece of gear

The ASQ controling the 1000 seems even, excuse me, more stupid since its just recording and editing events. Your 1000 is not different from that...(please dont start a PPQ fight)

No such thing as a stupid question, just stupid answers. I'm going to try out a 2xl on my next day off and see what's up. Take some samples I've used on the 1k. A 2xl is probably the "smarter" (since a lot of you cats are stuck on stupid/smart since one dink decided to make it into that kinda discussion) decision out of all of this.

Only way this won't turn into a ppqn war is if cats understand that ppqn has nothing to do with where the sequencer places notes. In that case the sp 303 and other sequencers like it should have the same timing as the MPC's.

Thanks for the input. All of em are good machines but they have their differences. I'm going to see if the 2xl is worth making the transistion.

im not sure if your refering to me as the "dink" that is talking about this smarter shit. i just dont see what u just stay with the 1000 and make it work for you. You keep switching around pieces but you will wind up with the same results. Seems pointless. If you need more complex sampling options, get a rack. No need to keep switching seqs cause your getting anal about one lil thing, that imo is human error instead of the machine. But by switching machines every 2 months your just creating a bigger longer unproductive learning curve. Stay with the same machine for a year then see if you need to upgrade. The notes that the mpc is moving your notes is so minute that you really just grasping at straws. Its your timing.

im not really sure what you mean by how the sequencer places notes... i thought that was EXACTLY what the PPQN referred to... if youre saying that the PPQN resolution is not what is causing you trouble, could you please explain what it is for me, maybe i missed something... im just trying to understand your problem a bit more...

maybe its just chitty azz pads on the 1k? just a thought...

First of all, this should be in studio environments, you've mentioned every MPC known to man as a possibility.

Personally, I don;t think anything you are saying makes any sense. I think you have a hard time making up your mind and think too much about decisions and then second guess yourself.

The timing you are refering to is the quantize timing, so PPQN may or may not affect it, the stablity of the clock might, and the 1000 did have a bunch of Quality control issues, but if you rely on quantizing that much then it won't matter what you use, because it sounds like regardless you won;t put in the time to practice to get it right. After all them MP's, you can't blame the tools man, it you that has to change if you are gonna get anywhere.

Nah, you just have a habit of misinterpreting what I'm saying and getting things confused, and blowing them way outta proportion. That's OK. I don't really pay attention to when you respond to my posts anymore cause you always go off on some BS.

How many MPC's have you tried MR. Elmacaca? I think it's been every single one. You settled on the 60 right? Cause the 60 has certain qualities to you that make it more appealing right? Well I'm searching for the one that sits right with me. I love the 1k. I just don't like the way the notes fit in the sequence. Same reason most cats don't like the Sp 303 or other sequencers, cause they just don't like the timing. Does it matter that some other cat can make a dope track on it and be satisfied? No, because it depends on the user.

If I want to go through and experiment with different types of gear it's my prerogative. If I want to explore possibilities and ask for some input that's my perogative too. If I don't want to hear cats tell me something is black when I know it's white...that's my perogative too. Sorry for being a little more expressive and not super logical. You might not understand what I was trying to get across.

It's unfortunate that I live in a place that doesn't have a ton of beatmakers and I can just go and try or borrow their gear to see how I like it. Most gear isn't even in the stores here. If I want to see what something is like....most of the time I have to go on E-bay...buy it...see what it's like 1st hand and say yea or nay.

Elmacaca don't make any comments on my motivations or train of thought when you don't know me and don't know what I'm thinking, or why I do things or did certain things in the past, because you don't know shit about me. You know your gear and you know all your technical junk. Don't assume you know people just as well.

Elmacaca get of your high horse about where this thread should be. I mentioned all the mpc's I'm sure, but the input I wanted was on the MPC 60 and ASQ 10. You don't grab on to context very well huh? If you were really that interested on keeping things where they should be instead of just getting up my culo, you would be on people's cases who use this as the "your Music Forum" and the sp-1200 forum, and the s950 forum. Last time I checked this was an MPC forum, and the name specifically says 60, and 3000. You got a lot of other culos to get into Elmacaca to make this forum strictly about what it's supposed to be.....including your own culo. But of course that doesn't seem to be your objective does it, or else you would mention it all the time in here. You had lots of opportunity to say things to keep this forum "pure."
