Yes. to hear the effects, ensure you are at the 'main screen'.
Hold down the 'shift' and press the 'mixer' button. you will now be in the 'Please select drum program to edit' page. Select the drum program you want to add effects to (FN 1-4 button) then press the button underneath EFX Edit (F6 button). From there you will see a block to the bottom right (F6 button again)that says 'MIX'-ensure that whatever effect you are using (mine pops up in multi efx) is 'on' by toggling the F6 button .
next press the drum F5 setup button on the same screen, which will take you to another screen. press the FN1-FN4 button depending again on the drum program you want to add effects to. when there press the orange 'open window' button. You should now be in the 'channel settings screen'. from there, use your 'cursor keys' and toggle over to the section that says 'FX' Use your data wheel and scroll it until you see 'M1' or whatever effect you have setup to be on. hit a pad, and you should hear your effect. if you don't, on the same screen ensure that the volume for the effect is above zero, and try it again...
in a nutshell
1. Main screen
2. press Shift-Mixer
3. F6 (fx edit)
4. F6 (fx on)
5. F1, F2, F3 or F4 (the program you are working with)
6. press 'open window'
7.hit a pad the hear your sample
8. cursor over to 'fx' and scroll in the effect (m1, r1 etc)
9. Cursor over to efx Volume and use jog wheel to increse the amount of volume of the effect.
This got me confused at first, too...it took a while to figure it out and the manual says shite about it...
