I finally got my Microtech PCD-47B SCSI reader yesterday off of Ebay. Swapped out my Zip250 for it, messed with the jumper settings a bit and... VOILA! Works like a champ! It's like having 3 hard drives in 1. I can't believe more people aren't doing this. It was way too easy.
Thanks to everyone on the forum for their inputs on accomplishing this. Now I got 30 Zips I won't ever be using again.

Found this post online on Akai message board. Seems there were a few people who did not find any success with this reader. I was looking in to buying one cos I found a guy who is selling his dirt cheap. I dont know much about them as far as compatability but I know i will have to consider making the move as soon as my ZIP drive goes down.

Many of you know how much I like SCSI PC card reader to replace floppies,
Zips, etc.

Do not buy the Microtech PCD-47B SCSI card reader to use with your Akai. I
have just tested a third one of these and not managed to get anyone of them
to work.

If anyone knows different, let me know.

congrats Juke

I have the 47B also and I only had one problem with it and mpc3000 helped me out, it's been working fine ever since.....

A lot of the 47B's out there have a pre-loaded read only firmware which have caused problems..... midicase.com has the read/write version.

lol, just realized the sender of that email above..... he has several of these drives up and running now.... that email is from 2002.

I got this off of the MIDICASE.COM website:

PCD-47 Firmware Issues

The PCD-47's seem to have several versions of the firware. With the PCD installed, you should see a version number in the FORMAT screen similar to m3.1 or r3.1. If you have 'r' showing, that is a READ ONLY firmware and you will not be able to write to or format any card in the PCD. The first PCD-47 I bought had a READ ONLY firmware which I purchased from a typically clueless e-bay seller.

If you need the manual for it... here it is:

Yo has anyone tried these with Akai Rackmount samplers?

"Do not buy the Microtech PCD-47B SCSI card reader"

That was posted in a response to receiving two readers that we not working properly. A later message cleared the issue up with the firmware.

Actually, the reader FAQ at the midicase site should be the final up-to-date answer (and in fact is the same author as the above message).

"Yo has anyone tried these with Akai Rackmount samplers? "

Yes and certain S-series work with certain PCD's. We have discussed this extensively on the Akai Pro Samplers mailing list, which the above message was quoted from.

Okay I know someone who is selling one of these how can I find out if it is read or R-Write version. I am sure this guy is clueless. Are there any markings or serials that would give this away.

Before I bought my drive, I asked the seller if it was writable and of course he didn't know what I was talking about. I sent him emails from the midicase.com website showing how there was a difference in drives. He then told me he honestly didn't know, but if I won it and it didn't work for me, that i could send it back in the original box for a refund. I kept the email just incase it hadn't worked. Luckily it did.

Oh yeah... I checked my reader inside and out and there was nothing printed or stamped on it stating that it was/wasn't readable or writable. Sorry dude...

Cool homie well this cat says he has no clue to what I was talking about so I guess I will have to buy it and see. He says that if it dosent work I can easily resale it cos he sold 3 already to some others. He said so far no one has complained about them. :?

It really does not matter if the firmware is read or write since the correct firmware is posted at the midicase website. With a $5 SCSI card in a PC, the firmware can be updated yourself.

True dat.
I just updated mine from the 3.1 to 3.2 firmware. I don't know what the difference was but I went ahead and did it anyway.
It still works the same.
