Using samples & loops have always been a part my production... it's how i started. I'm definitely from the diggin era, it'll never die with me. These days, with sound modules & virtual instruments sounding as real as they do, i incorporate them into my sampling. Playing on top of, underneath or along with, samples, gives me a lot of room for song structure. I don't feel locked into the dynamics of a sample anymore and it opens avenues for rhyme travel. Using sound modules makes me use samples that i never would have before and i'm always hearing new things in records i've had for years. By no means are you alone...

P.S. What part of the A-Town are living in?

Loops are for the untalented. The only reason people used loops in the first place was because of insuficient memory in the first samplers that came out. There is no excuse these days. I love drum programing.. just check out a few of my tracks I have posted @.. www.myspace.com/threshed

To say loops are for the untalented, is an opinion of your own. The only reason i started using loops in the first place was because, they were dope and i didn't have the utilities to record a live drummer. Your techniques are your own, the crowd will decide the rest.

Im afraid we might be refering different definitions of the term loop. When I say loop, I mean a repeated or repatative phrase or bar. This can also means a cyclicly repeated sample that doesn't vairy. So my definition of looping is from a compositional perspective. No need to record a live drummer.. So if your saying that you use loops in thier original form without choping or editing them to create a new pattern, then yes.. you are an untalented biter thats just living of another persons expressive talent and you deserve to pay royalties out the ass. But if your permutating, blending, and choping drum loops to create new expressive patterns out of thier segments.. then your pushing the edge of creativity as we know it. And dont sweat to hard.. I dont hate on you if your learning cuz we all have to start somewhere.

Much love to pros and newbies.. may we all surpass eachother time and time again..

As long as your enjoying yourself that all that matters! Keep at it and much love! Im just in it for different reasons, but I can still respect that you create. I just wish more people would strive to be original with their expressions as aposed to re-using the same patterns.. Mediocrity kills culture and im sure you hip hop heads can testify to that.

From country western to Pop everyone using loops is part of major music production today as fact according SOS. Loops and grooves come in different parts. Drum looops, percussion instrumentals, or bass phrases from CDs, vinyl, or from Akai, Big Fish Audio. All of which were copyrighted and owned by someone else which a license is needed to use. How one uses it whole, chopped, or just notes is a matter of choice. Even if a loop is chopped you have to by law get a license or permission by law. But because you may make it unrecognizable you may get away with it. It is still biting as someone calls it.

To make this simple major useage of drum machines, samplers, sequencers and etc were started by djs using these gears to extend, recreate and remix records from 1975 til now. Most traditional musicians had no vision of their usage unless they were on some experimental msuic or they work with an unquie engineer or producer at the time. These djs were not classically trained musicians creating their own loops from scratch and making records. These djs started a new context of sound making music from records which was predicted to happen since 1948 by a forward thinking musicologist that electronic music would move this way.

Give props to Cool Herc who was a major part of this new music along with other just doing it on the turntables, the next generation Marly Marl, Flash, and others incorporating the technology to extend the boundaries of the style, and big props, to the sound providers of today to many mofos to name but more than likely their music influenced alot of people to pick up their mpcs.

The real issue is that is it important that if you use a loop you haven`t created yourself that you have to have clearance from the publishers. I don`t think in my opinion it makes you a bitier that comes from a traditional mainstream trained musician way of thinking and if so that means that you are a drummer, keyboardist, and would and can play all of your own instruments like Prince. No need for a mpc when you could just use a DAW or HDR.

On the real it all about djing and being the selector one time. Finding the right one, arranging the right way, and chopping if you want to work on it more or hide it it the job of the producer in sample based production.

The SELECTOR has the ear on what sounds good and will excited the audience from DJs point of view. That is why we dig SO much to find and select that killer groove. As far as drum loops still people extract the groove from a drum loop and just change the sound or recreate the same groove by playing on top just sampling technology makes it easier.

Keep on looping Cap, Lord and other I`m with ya. How it is used depends on clearance and to get back that soul keep on digginig. "Love or Hate it"

Shine on.

By the way I stated some facts just from my point of view and several million music consumers and the dance music industry. The more hits the better.

By the way I believe this days most people play their own drum patterns it is much more fun. :D

yeah ive made hundreds of beats and as far as drums, theres only 2 or3 that use a full drum loop. i like making my own ya dig?

i usually chop up, but once in a blue moon i loop a sample too. i dont think it makes me untalented, i just like **** with my mpc thats all.

I use my MPC 4000 as a GREAT Midi Sequencer.

It's not just a sampler! But remember those samples don't have to be loops ;)

Cheers,

Remember to choose to do what you want no rules no one telling another how to make music according to their values use what you want. No rules just good music. Remember it is an musical process. It is a musical culture that has changed and will upset, redifine, and developed into something new.I

It`s Materials and Inspiration

i totally agree... but think it's a bit wrong to say someone is untalented because someone is using a repeated drumloop, lazy perhaps but not necessarily untalented...

i listened to those tunes and i really liked "exanimate concussions" it's nice to see people using the mpc for dnb, most people seems to use the computer these days.

ok back to topic, i always program my own beats with one shot drumhits
because i have far more control over the beats that way... well i did play with a drumbreak when i started making beats 7 years ago but i was quickly bored... i wanted to be able to program beats like that my self.

I agree with you aswell.. alot of the reason I consider somebody to be untalented for using strait unaltered loops or breaks is for a few reasons:

It doesn't take talent to press record.
It doesn't take talent to press play.
It doesn't take talent to repeat a sequenced loop or recorded phrase.
And most of all im trying to get people to advance with their technique as psitech has.

And if that means pissing people of by stating that thier played out technique only articulates an almost completely automated function of all basic audio production equipment, then so be it. Im just sick and tired of repetative music of any kind. If I have to hurt somebodies ego to make them progress as a musician I am more than happy to do so. And remember.. All progression is based on sacrifice and and or pain. So to all of you that are hurt, upset, pissed, or inraged cuz I said it takes no talent to loop something over and over and over or to just use an un altered phrase.. you hurt for a reason. Think about it.

Thanks for the listen psitech! Do you have any audio posted on the web? Much respect to an obviosely educated beat programer!
