[b]MPC60II 3.1oe OS upgra/ "burned EPROM chips" a dilemma!!!

I called VST and acted like I did'nt know anythng about them burning the 3.10 OS on your existing Eprom chips and dude was like,"the only way to get the 3.10 OS upgrade is from the Roger Linn site and that is it." I guess this post incited a few phone calls to VST Most short cuts eventually turn into dead ends!

no sh*t. Let the customer "beware" and if they get burned (no pun intended) by the shop, then let them drop the dime on VST to Roger Linn.

I called VST today to inquire about getting the software upgrade and they sited the same exact prices listed on rogerlinn.com..

It is really sad to hear you guys admit that you have no problem stealing from the very person that invented the MPC series. The very same person who's signature makes certain MPC`s more `valuable` to you.

Pretty simple. The actual cost of the MPC3000 sofware updates are embedded in the original cost of the equipment. There is no such thing as a free software update. Most manufacturers charge you upfront for a later update. They just don't tell you. Korg, Roland, Akai, Kawai, Electrix, Access, Nord, Novation, Waldorf all do it.

The original cost of the MPC60 only included updates up to 2.x (the last that Akai sells for cost of the EPROM, about $50). Linn creating 3.10 is an after market item in which he does not get the luxury of embedding in the original selling price. If Linn and Akai had the foresight of 3.10 back when they were first designing it, they would have just charged $2999 for the MPC60 instead of $2799 and just sold you an update for a few dollars later on.

The MPC60 business model for updates is actually my favorite. I would rather see manufacturers charge less upfront and have owners pay for enhancements as they see fit later on. That way I can choose whether I pay for an update or not. If I do not think the update is worth $200, then I do not have to buy it. Instead, I have already paid my $200 in the original purchase price of the MPC300, MPC2000, MPC200XL for a software update that may or may not ever materialize.

I must apologize on behalf of VST. A couple of weeks ago our parts department received a call from a customer in search of current software for the MPC60. The new parts manager was unaware that v. 3.10 for the MPC60 (which upgrades the MPC60 to MPC3000 compatibility) is sold through Roger Lynn and is not the same as MPC3000 v.3.10 software that is sold through AKAI. This is the only MPC software that is not an AKAI software update (unlike the numerous other EPROM upgrades which are simply copied from the master AKAI software). While all other EPROM software upgrades cost $55, the MPC60 v.3.10 is sold through Roger Lynn for $200. We have been in contact with Roger Lynn and explained the situation. We apologize for the misunderstanding.
