The Low end theory makes your beat sound FULL(as opposed to flat/hollow.) Just listen to all your classic hip hop albums. For me it was the Stakes is High album(the low end theory was very obvious.) Thats how they(legendary producers) do their ****...Most heads dont understand the low end theory(or even know what it is) so they try to use computers to substitute. The boom bap isnt in the computer. Its on the MPC(any of them) or SP or whatever machine your using and those dusty platters. Now using the low end theory and then importing your **** into a computer to fully master it....now your talkin good hip hop music.

So how do you apply low end to a sample? (On the MPC2000XL) I'm norwegian, so I don't fully understand the meaning of the word 'low end".

the lowend theory is in whateva the producer uses as long as he knows how he wants his shit to sound

use the simul function... so that another pad plays at the same time you press the original one....

I use that SIMULT function alot with hard kicks. Sometimes I put like a panned and reverbed tamb hit in there and turn the tamb MIXER volume to 0 and the FXSEND up a little. The after I tap the kick out the way I want I go in TIMING for that track and I might use the LATER timing function and it's sounds REAL good afterward.

Turn your Freq to like 20 and your reson up to 10....or somewhere around those numbers....keep **** with it until your loop sounds like a bass line

What about hi hats? add low end to them? what if you want your bassline to stand out and you cloud its clarity in the mix by adding low end to the bass region from , say, a stringloop?

? I usually put the freq. to 0% and the Filter to 15. It makes a good deep bases sound for any loop that cha' got.

It depends on how you want your hi hats to sound. Im not saying just to layer shit up with alot of low end(only the parts that need it.) Apply it to the sounds that you want to thicken up(drums/basslines) and then adjust everything accordingly. If you want your bass line to be dominant in the mix....insteads of turning up the bassline....turn everything else down using your mixer. Mix by reducing instead of just turning stuff up....cuz when you do that you start to introduce noise, and other transient frequencies that you dont want(thats when shit starts to get clouded.) If you add low end to a string loop....only add enough so that it doesnt interfere with the bassline. Also, experiment with panning. Its just like watching a live band perform. All the instruments and mics are placed in different parts of the room. Sound is coming from different directions. Try to emulate that with the MP. Shit starts to sound cloudy because all the sounds are coming out the same direction. With hi hats....what i do is i layer them up and adjust them while the beat is playing....i keep turning that data wheel(adjusting the parameters) until it sounds the way i want it to. A basic hip hop beat is always gonna be drums and basslines....those are the parts that you want to apply the low end theory to. If you do it to those, it gives more depth to your beat. Sorry man, i cant explain stuff that good. I just know how to make beats...

Hey buttonpusha, informative answer, especially:

"Mix by reducing instead of just turning stuff up....cuz when you do that you start to introduce noise, and other transient frequencies that you dont want(thats when **** starts to get clouded.)"

That's gonna help me later for sure! Cheers.
