assigning sounds to the 8 outputs

Ok sorry i posted this twice - wanted to post it in the newbie section instead. I have a mc2000xl with most recent O/S. I upgraded the output expander and now am able to send sounds to te outputs. I want to eq sounds through the mixer. Howerver, when i assign a sound to an output you can hear it in the output and also on the main stereo output. How can i seperate the sounds from the main to the outputs without having them both play at the same time???

Well the first thing that came to my mind was unplug the main outs so u cant hear anything from it if that is not possible go to the mixer for the main outs and lower them all the way down.
