It really depends on how you want to work. There is no set way you gotta do things. It might be easier for arranging and re-arranging purposes if you string your songs out with a lot of (shorter?) sequences that way you can easily arrange things in Song Mode. Like if you eventually end up putting the track to vocals you might need to arrange things by making the hooks longer or shorter, or the have breakdowns in different places to go better with the vocals and song, etc etc. It just allows for more flexibility down the road when you really want to finish up and complete songs. You just go into Song Mode and do your arranging with the jog dial and arrows.

ight koo. So do you have a certain way you arrange your song? Do you do like 4bars for the song and then next seq the hook?

Nah...I don't have a certain way. It's better not to so you have some variation in your work. Some cats arrange their tracks the same all the time and it gets boring. Just experiment with the song. When it's a just a beat, to me personally, it doesn't matter too much how it's arranged, but I think it's just a good idea that you set up things in your MPC so you are flexible with your tracks when doing vocals and such later on. The arrangement will come from the song and the MC. You will need to do what is best for the overall product.

Unless you want to do some DJ Shadow / RJD2 / Prefuse 73 type of stuff and make your stuff on the instrumental steez then again I wouldn't worry too much about having a specific song structure from track to track...it will get boring.

But a traditional song structure will go like this:

2-4 bar intro sequence.

16 bars for verse. you can break this up into several 2, 4, or 8 bar smaller sequences for variation

then a 2-8 bar hook. 4 bar hook is good.

then verse, hook, verse, hook

then a 2-4 bar outro (MC's like to talk shit at the end of their songs haha)

And that's pretty much it. Just an outline to get you started.

what I usually do for a quick beat is make a 4 bar loop or 2. That will be the verse, then i usually will drop a few parts out for the verse. Then a little varitation for the hook. When I make beats that I don't like I will just keep the small loop, and when people listen to it if they have a direction they might want to take it we hook it up there. But the verse is where the money is at.

i usually do it all on one sequence and then just mute tracks when im trackin into nuendo. Its easier for me that way. Then I can just switch shit up whenever i want to.

say you do your beat like this

Track1:kick
Track2:snare
Track3:hats
track4: some other shit
track5: some other shit
track6:mainmelody
track7: breakdown drums(dont know what to call it)
track8: chorus drums
track9: chorus melody

of course some beats require less tracks and some require more tracks. Just make sure you name your tracks or it will get confusing.

I keep all my sequences at 4 bars. Just helps me structuring the song. I'll addd or remove bars if need be, but on average I got 4 bars per sequence. I like to mix sh!t up, so I usually only use each sequence once. So I'll have thre difrent hooks. Maybe only a li'l tiny difference, but it's there. I've used up to i think 25 sequences in one song. Not too sure tho.
