Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hi,
i read somewhere in here that you can damage mpc by turning on/off mpc or external scsi zip/hd in wrong order, but now i cant find it in the search. can someone tell me before i mess something up?
thanks,

I think it's safer to turn on the scsi device first. What you don;t want to do is disconnect scsi devices when the mpc is turned on... Then you will risk blowing the fuse.

PS. I found this with the search function very easily.
A good way to search is to try and find threads containing multiple keywords that you think people would use to discuss the topic of interest. For example, to find the answer to your very question, you could search for "scsi AND zip AND power AND first", being sure to put "AND" (in capitals) inbetween the keywords so that the search engine looks for threads containing all of the words you want. If that's too narrow of a search, you can substitute the word "power" for "on" or something like that to bring up more results.

Use this information.

I turn my SCSI on first, 'cause my MPC is set to auto load from my zip if I hav a disk with an .ALL and/or .APS files in the main folder. I figure that if I can set my MPC to do this auto-load, than it should be safe enough, right?

i just trun shT on as needed been doin it for 5 years now and nothings happen i turn on my 2kxl then i sample some stuff and when ready to save i turn on the zip and save , or if i'm workin on something i was messin with the nite before i just turn every thing on in no order, just what ever. i usually shut the zip off last cause i always save stuff before shutin down, so it just coincidence that thats how it happens .
sht i go somedays with out even turning on the zip. i'll just sample chop make a beat and shut it all off with out savin, i did that yesterday with two beats i was workin on, just tootry some things out.

i dont think it really matters how you turn on or shut down, like i said i've been doing it this way for 51/2 years now, no problem.
it doesnt say in the manul you have to shut down a certain way.
these machines are pretty rugged or they wont make them so you can beat on them ....

i would always turn on/plug in the zip drive first, then power up the mpc. the reason for this is sometimes i have lost what i was working on because i would try to get the mpc to recognize the zip but if it goes to floppy or flash rom its stuck there and will never recognize the zip, then you lose what you were trying to save.

Ok so to re cap
Turning on the MPC
you want to plug in the ZIP first
Then turn the power on the MPC

And
Shutting Down
you want to
Turn off the MPC First?
then un plug the zip?

Don't unplug the zip if you can help it, just turn the power off. I always thought you should turn the power on the scsi drive on BEFORE you turn the mpc on, and turn the mpc off before you turn the drive off. But I later learned it doesn't matter... The thing you have to remember not to do is physically disconnect the scsi cable when the mpc is on... I'm not sure if it matters whether the external drive in on or off though - I tried searching for a post where mpc3000 explained this but I couldn't find it.

well.. i sometimes in the middle of a track im making on the MPC unplug the SCSI and hook it into my computer if i wanna pull a big sample off the puter and then plug it back into the MPC.. if the MPC aint using the SCSI.. its almost like it never knew it was gone...

ive done this for about 3 or 4 years and ive never had a problem..

but i'm sure in the back of my mind i know this probably aint the best thing to do.. i wouldnt mind some electrical engineer type cat who would really know whats going on there when u unplug that stuff...

prob. shouldnt do it but it works...

but in answer to the real question.. i turn the zip on first and the turn the zip off last..

im like ede, going on 6 years of turning it on or off in any order. I had one zip drive go on me, but i dont think it had to do with the order i turned ish on.

i do remember in scratch though, the one with kanye on the cover, when they showed the studio he was working in, ther was a sticker on the mpc 2k that said - "warning! apply scsi before powering up! warning!"

yall better do it like that to be safe, but i aint changin my ways lol
