Are you sure it was possible before?
Yes, because that used to be the only way that one could play loops
that were a different length. I can take Sequence 1 which is 4 bars and take Sequence 2 which was 7 bars and have them both play at the same time.
I would also use it in a live situation when I wanted to Segue between 2 songs, I would bring in a 3rd track that had elements of both songs, so the
transition wouldn't be so sudden.
I purchased my MPC 4000 the day that OS 1.60 came out, so I'm guessing
it was that OS that it was possible. But then I remember after either 1.61 or 1.70 it didn't work.
Another bug about the Simul Play that came when this issue of not being
able to switch seq's is that you also can not turn it off. Once you've enabled it, NOW you have to press stop to get the Simul Play to turn off.
Below is the actual bug report that I sent into Akai on Feb 22, 2005 of this year. Looks like the bug showed up in OS 1.70. So I would try OS 1.60 and see if you get that feature....

When you turn Simul Play on and select a sequence, it is "locked".
When you turn Simul Play on and select a sequence, it is "locked", and you
can not change the sequence to another sequence or turn off the Simul Play
field, without first stopping the MPC. This is a new issue as of OS 1.70.
