ASR-10 Rack Or ASR-10 Keyboard?

I'm purchasing a Roland Fantom X6 in the next month or so and was looking to add the ASR-10 to my set-up (I used to own it, now I miss it like hell). I read a few things about the rack version not being as reliable as the keyboard version. I think it was about it getting too HOT or something like that, I may have forgotten. Well anyway, the reason the rack is more intriguing is cause well, it's cheaper and also because it has 8 outs standard (correct?). What I'd like to do is send sounds from the fantom to the asr to mangle them up a bit. I'll admit, I've never owned a rackmount so that would be a totally different experience for me than touching keys all the time. At the same time I feel like I'm only using the rack for the sound/effects anyway so why have another keyboard?

Can someone tell me the pro's and con's of owning the Rack over the Keyboard? And would I need to purchase a zipdrive for it? Also, was there a newer rack like their was with the keyboard?

the rack was the 1 without the heat problems it was the keyboard. I don't think they ever updated the rack. You will still need the zip, but the rack came with the 8 outs and scsi standard. I had both and just sold the keyboard.

actually this kinda is a great question...

I own an x6 as well, and I'm prolly going to just buy a asr rack...

but first I have to get an mpc, cuz these pads on the x6 are horrible...

my opinion though about the rack vs keyboard, is well, I really have no need for another keyboard, plus I think the rack is cheaper...

My main wanting for the rack though is the sampling, the x is cool and all but need some grit...

If anything I'll sample through the asr, then send to the x, then save on there or on the comp through usb...

i chose the rack ... i had the keyborad when it first came out and i fuuucked up and sold it...i control the rack via triton.. and its the same thing....you wont be upset...trust me......

how do u go about SENDING the sound from the asr to the fantom though?

and when u want to STOP controlling the asr rack and go back to using the fantom sounds, etc. how do u do that? i know nothing about mid

sending sounds from the ASr and samplimg into the fantom= audio out to audio in. But if you want to control the asr using the fantom. then midi out from the fantom to midi in into the asr. Then run the audio outs from both into a mixer. If need to know I would suggest downloading both manuals, and reading them that should help you out. Plus I think roland has a gang of videos on how to use the fantom, or any of thier for that matter.

so basically I would need a MIXING BOARD mixer and not a dj mixer? And if so would I ABSOLUTELY need that NOW? I really don't have the money for a hard disk recorder right now and I don't wanna go the computer recording route.

you'll only need a mixer if you want to midi up the both of them, and route both their audio outs. If you just want to sample into ASR, and or vice versa. Then you wouldn't need a mixer.

My plan is, certain sounds from the fantom like strings, leads etc., I'd want to send to sample to the asr and mangle the sounds up, add effects. then send it back to the fantom to sequence, or does that sound like TOO much work?

I don't know exactly why, but I think i'm going to get the keyboard over the rackmount. Honestly, I miss the keyboard version I used to own and just want that experience again. I haven't used a rackmount before so I Just kinda wanna stick with what I know, UNLESS I come across some incredible deal for one.

I have used both, and now I'm using the ASr 10 keyboard, and I'm really enjoying it. The rack is cool especially if your limited on space, but i like using keyboard, because its an all in sampling workstation. From what I know so is the Fantom. Alot of ppl really seem to really enjoy the Fantom. There is difinitely, a big price difference between the 2. Let us know what you end up buying. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
