you can copy your sequence a bunch of times. set up the sequence copies with the desired mutes and arrange in song mode. :!:

do the beat how you like it. get all your tracks/instruments how you initially want them. copy that sequence and paste them to new sequences. and go throught the sequences and change what you want to change...

You can also copy and paste bars if thats what you are used to. I personally find song mode constraining, as I am used to songwriting being a linear process. I have been using MPC's since '86 and quit using song mode the same year. You can easily, cut & paste, erase specific bars of a certian track etc. I typically start with an 8 bar segment and simply copy it a number of times at the end of the sequence. I will then go in and erase the drum marker / roll at the end of the eight bars and record a different roll etc. every 8 bars. The loop function is easily used if you just want to work on a specific section, or you can use auto punch with locate points to acheive the same goal. While song mode can be used to accomplish all the same things, I just find that it's an extra 2 steps to accomplish the same end result. In song mode you have to create the song and then, if you want to edit in the song you are forced back to working in sequence mode. After that, you will probably still want to convert the whole thing back into a sequence so it just makes sense to keep it in sequence mode. This is particularlly true if you are used to creating sequences this way already.

i expected there to be workarounds to working and flowing differently and thats only a good thing as belive you should have a box around around you when making tracks but at the same time you should decide on the shape of that box to suit your style ( sorry just me painting a picture of my thoughts on this )

Anyway im gonna play out both ways and feel what make me flow better as the arranging of my tracks can be quite a "spur of the moment" process and i want to capture that in one breath

Thanks again everyone much appreciated

That sound kinda tricky! So you arrange complete tracks by cutting and pasting bars into your sequences? I think the song mode would be better when you want to listen and experiment with different arrangements.
to each their own though...
I'll copy bars to my sequences when I want to go from a 2 bar drum loop to 4 or 8 bars for bass/melody.
One thing that bugs me about the song mode is that it only plays the entire sequence before starting the next one. easy work around though.
Anyways, I guess you must have a really good idea how your tracks will come together if you're copying and pasting like that.

Isn't that the idea? You want it to only play part of a sequence before playing the next? When you say "only plays the entire sequence", what do you mean exactly?

i think he means if the sequence is swiching from step 4 say to step 5 in song mode it will play the full lenth of that sequence (4) before going to the next sequence .i.e 3 reps of 4 bars ect ect but i may be wrong here

What I mean is if you have 2 sequences or loops that are 4 bars long, in song mode you can play sequence #1 then have it switch to sequence #2, but it won't switch to the 2nd sequence after the 1st bar of the first sequence, it has to play all 4 bars of the first sequence then it'll play the second sequence. So I think it would be nice if you could specify how many bars a seqence will play before the next sequence plays. As it is, you can specify how many times the sequence will repeat in song mode, and you can manually trigger the next sequence with Sudden (i think).
Kind of confusing to explain. I'm still new to the mpc so I could be wrong on some of that.
