It's a Roland SBX-80 sync-box.
They were probably locking the MPC up to SMPTE or a deck.

I thought The MPC 60 & 3000 were already had the Capability to read Smpte???

SMTPE needs to talk. The SBX-10, 80, 1000 units are used to receive or send SMPTE but deal with several other formats.
It's a go between to either convert the MPC's SMPTE to another sync source or to receive a sync source and convert it SMPTE.
You can use hihats, snares or most any type of pulse to trigger, as well standard clock formats.
Remember the 60II has a lot of old school aspects, and external dedicated sync-boxes always worked better back then.
You can do some crazy stuff starting and stopping sequences from a turntable or whatever just by setting the level of an incoming audio pulse.
If you find a pic of the back of the SBX-80 just compare it to the pic.

Doesn't look like a roland though.

you all don't know what this is ? OF COURSE it IS a Roland SBX80, i've got one - the back looks the same like in this picture ... and every vintage using producer should have one in his setup - it's my Master-MIDI&SYNC unit

Anybody who's ever seen D&D studios or knows anything about Preem knows that that picture was indeed taken in Studio B (his studio) at D&D. He's certainly not "recording in another studio that uses a mpc 60."
