J Dilla + Horn sample + ? = Bass line

I was listening to the Welcome to Detroit Instrumental album today and the bass line he was using sounded like it was a processed horn then just as i'm thinking that the horn comes in and it had to be the same sample.

What did he do to get that effect out of a horn?

the shyt sounded like a fat azz bass line. I know he's the man as far as filtering goes so i assumed it was that which got him there, but on a 4k how would i go about tweaking another instrument to sound like a bass?

i need more specifics than "go into the effects page and filter it down", if you know how to do it please respond if not keep it buttoned.

Just pitch down a fat horn sample. Fog horns work great. Use a little lowpass (turn the frequency down) if you want it to be realy bassy or you think it has to much high end. Then apply some distortion it. I havnt heard the track but ive done something similar using the listed method.

well. He could have layered a bass line underneath it using the same notes. I do this alot. Ill sample a riff or a loop, then add my own bass to it- but, not just a funky bassline.........Ill use a generic bass i can mix in so you cant necessarily decipher it as a bass line.......and interpolate the exact notes as the loop im matching it to. That way you can turn a couple piano notes into a piano gangsta bass.....or a clav or strings into bass lines. Basically using the instrument as the top end of the bass to give it definition.

alot of times you have to filter. Usually some off the bottom of the sample so you dont get mudd if you blend your bass in. Plus sometimes off the top off your bass. Try it with a simple string pluck or guitar pluck type melody......just loop the sample, and hit the notes until you find the right ones.

another tip. Some times you get a hot ass sample. But no bass line. Well instead of going with the filter method like most people would. Listen to the root notes through out the loops that usually hit on the 1's and 3's (downbeat) layer bassnotes in the same key and notes.......similar to what you would do with a chord progression. Say you get a 2 bar chord progression....layer single bass notes that follow the root notes of the chords.

I don't think he played bass under it though, it just sounded like a really tweaked version of the horn and when the actual horn sample came in on top of it, it was like they were long lost friends/ lovers.

i've usually dug the beats i've heard dilla do for people, but never listened to straight up instrumentals by him....... def dig his staaalll.
