I just got back into using my 1k after having it since it came and and I find it now to be my fav machine, even ahead of the 4k. due to speed and lack of options. But now to the filters. I know everyone hollas ASR-10 filters and stuff, but for a hardware box that is marketed like a 1k the filters are pretty damn good, you don't have all the options, but they are still pretty ill but what do yall think?

i say 5/10

they're ok for basics i guess but the software filteres on Halion 2 murder them.

They're ok, fairly transparent for using like a kill eq, but don't really hav any character. Also cause they're static you can't sweep them which is a real pity.

i just went from a 2kxl back to a 1k - - i really miss the filter envelopes with the 1k. such a simple thing, and it can add so much too, maybe it'll be added in an update

my new favorite thing is put one set of mpc outputs into the input on my machinedrum

then i can do filter sweeps on the sound (or even have a pattern of filter envelopes etc.)

mpc is good for combining with other gear this way, since the options are kind of bare by itself.

i think the mpc filters sound good though as far as static filters go.

Definitely the biggest drawback with the filters on the 1K. They made the 4-BAND EQ sweepable but not the filters.

for basslines 4/10 no way as good as the 2000XL filters, but for high end and bandpass, 8/10 i always seem to get a a good sound out of em..

yeah the HPF is really handy. keep the tracks from getting muddy

I dont really like the filters. I often use the low/mid/highpass function, but the "real" filters are mostly crap. i prefer using the master compress, cause it sometimes makes the sound a bit more punchy.
as far as the reverb, phaser, etc effects are concerned, they are 3rd class stuff... :(
the distortion could be a nice fx, but you can't adjust it really good, cause the steps between the possible values are too big...

co-sign that

as the 1K is my 1st and only mpc I've ever used I have no idea how they compare to the filters on other mpc's.

I'm comparing the 1k filters with the 4k filters, because those are the 2 I've owned. The 1k filters actually have a better sound in my opinion to the 4k. The 4k filters are horrible and too digital and tinny sounding, even though you have tons of more filter options on there. (on the 1k) The high pass is very usable and the low pass is pretty decent. I still haven't found much use for the band pass at all... cause...it really sucks.

I know it seems counter-intuitive because you want the most "thump" in your drums, but try using a dash of high pass on your drums, especially the snare, and give it a little bit of resonance, it will make your drums hit harder by making them cut through the mix and have a nice snap instead of a dull thud.

Bhunt, before I sold my 4k I found a filter setting on their that made drums hit hard as flowers. I almost tore down my house and broke my speakers. It's one of the filters in the midrange. I think it's the one that looks like an upside down "u" or "V". If you use that midrange filter on your drums you can get them to knock like nothing else I've ever heard.

Edit: I think it's the mid-range peak filters.

on the 4k, I might try it. I have my 4k sitting in closet for some reason I can't let it go. I'm using mosty MPC/ASR combo, but I will bring the 4k out from time to time.
