Does anyone know how to get that 90s gangsta whine sound? Or the liljon whine sound: like on "Goodies" by Ciara.

I know you proably can get the sound from an analog syth, but how specifically?

Ah...the 'west coast worm.' That's what a friend of mine calls that sound. Haha.

Yeah, your best bet is an analog synth - the key is the "Portamento" control.
Not all synths have this - most monophonic synths have it.
This control is called different things on different synths, like "glide", etc.

It basically makes one note 'slide' up or down to the next note you play.

its pretty easy.

There are a few was of doing it.......

1. find a synth that has a "wormy lead" or one that fits your taste
2. use the higher octaves of a bass patch
3. use the higher octaves of a synthy patch
4. dont be afraid to try any sound, youd be suprised.

I find that 2 and 3 are the best. Each patch is differant but most of the time if you go all the way to the right of your keyboard, those keys will give you a good wormy patch. i think its more in your performance than anything else, as most any bass patch will work.

Something like a mophatt/proteous, triton, roland, have good synthy patches. Ive found roland has some preset already. On the triton i use bass patches. On the proteous I use synthy patches.

you dont always have to apply portemento but it does sound good when you do. **** with effects settings and phaser, vibrato, filter, etc. type settings to get differant sweeps and funky stuff. Also sometimes you have to mess with the decay of a patch. you want to use a patch that has good sustain so you can get good transitions from note to note. You know those bass patches where if you press the next key fast enough it like melds into the next note? use one of those.(sorry forgot what thats called)

The only real problem ive ever had with wormy leads is that sometimes they can get too high pitched and really hurt your ears and ruin the track.......so just becareful you dont mix them too loud it sounds like shit.

thats all i can think of for now!

oh, and Ive also made some patches on my mpc4000 too that work. Some samples from hollowsun i down loaded, ive just use the higher octaves, then filtered until i got my desired sound!

personally i think thats one of the easiest sound to get and sound good right away. Dont think too hard about it. Plus its always a good solution to filling up your track if it needs it. Put it in the background of a chorus....or mix it really low in the back ground to fill the gaps-so you can hardly realize its there, but it does its job.

use the same notes as your main notes, like the bassline notes. or root notes of the chords. you really only need a couple notes, especially if you get an effect or portemento going.

also my beats are usually 2 bars with drop ins and outs. I spread the wormy leads over 4 bars. This is easy because you just sustain the notes long, and it makes your loops seem less like loops, it carries your ear farther. thats why they are good for chorus' because it tricks the ear to thinking there is a change up when there really isnt, ya know!

peace
