id say a combo.
When your are producing you should naturally be mixing.......i.e. filtering, matching sounds that fit good together, fixing a bass if its too muddy, adjusting the levels of each sound-like the hihat compared to the kick and snare, etc. Think about it.......how can you put a bassline in yourtrack if it covers up all the other sounds? how do you get your drums tosound good if you dont give them the right velocities?
id break it down like this but this is how i do it with my guy.....other people probably work differant.
1.production/creative mixing-do this when you are making the track
2.mixing session just for mixing and redoing/fixing, (like proof reading a rough draft) usually give it time after you initially make the track.
3. repeat number 2
4. mixing session. You dont change or redo any sequencing or replace sounds.........all you are doing is tweaking the sound that will be in the track and working towards the final mix. Usually done after tracking.
*leave major effects to the engineer, even major cuts and boosts. Keep your original just in case you **** up and the engineer needs to fix it.
3.engineering mixing.......hell have somethings to say about your mix or sometimes there are things you dont know what to do.
4.finalizing.
you should do atleast 1 and 2, if you do a good job you might be able to skip 3, but some engineers who finalize will also do some final tweaking....Also keep in mind that when you add a vocalist it complicates shit, your mix for a "nonvocal track" might be differant than with a vocalist.
