Good question im still debating it myself. Right now i have the 2000xl with only the expanded memory [32mb]. If i was to get the 8 outs, and effects board - both of which i need now, b/c i just started recording - it would run me like $500 plus on ebay. And if i do that, i still won't have as much memory capability of the MPC 1000! That along with the 2gig flash card, buitl in effects, and standard 4 outs is what's really drawing me towards the machine.

From wat i seen/heard the sample engine is the same, there are only a few flaws, which in my opinion can be resolved with a computer [reverse, timestretch]. Whats also funny is that if you do plan on selling your 2000xl nowadays you won't be able to sell it for over $1000 [check ebay]. The only place that does that are retail stores. And one would assume once the MPC 1000 drops, retailers will lower thier prices for the 2000xl. This does not in any say that u should get the 1000 b/c ur 2000xl will be cheaper, its jus an observation that our product is dropping in price due to newer "better" technology.

I'm still debating, maybe i'll get it in addition to the 2000xl, try it out, then if i like it i'll sell he 2000xl. But the only problem then will be that the 2000xl will go for less than a $1000! Ahh, if only there's was an magic 8ball around.....

I dont think the retailers will be dropping the price of the MPC2000xl, they are going to segment the line and say that the MPC1000 is great for portability, but lacks things that hardcore mpc users are used to(reverse, timestretch), and lacks things that studio users desire(SMPTE options).

We all know that the typical kid listening to hip hop has that urban legend story in his mind that without an mpc you can't make hip hop music. So the MPC 1000 will be for him. The kid who has saved up an extra 300 bucks will get the MPC 2000xl.

All of this being conjecture because they could decide to drop the MPC2000xl from its line up.

I am contemplating getting one, because of the memory and because of the USB connectability. Wondering how I will convert my library and what will happen to all the cd's i have.

To convert all your samples uses cdxtract (www.cdxtract.com). Its a conversion tool for pretty much every sampler format out there. convert from EVERY format to EVERY format. besides it is simply the best for organizing all your samples and to search for them. you can create a text database containing every sample you own for easy reference.
try it

"convert from EVERY format to EVERY format"

This is not exactly true. CDxtract only converts to DOS based formats (i.e. formats that you can store on your computer).

Translator will convert to more native formats, for example, I can read an Emu CD and write it directly to a Akai formatted disk. Neither drive can be seen by the PC.

yea akai still sells 2000xl in stores so why would they want to cancel one out when they can just still make money on the 1000 and the xl

the mpc 1000's pads are horrible (yes I did play with it at AES)
The responsiveness was slow and un-natural.
Stick with the 2000xl, no one has gone wrong this route.
