you guys effin rock, thank you so much for doing this. if i could help at all, i would, but if there's anything i can do let me know.

Dum question here::

What does everyone think are the really great things about having a drive?
Does it load faster? Cause the flash cards load pretty fast anyway for me...

Or is it the space, you run out of room on your cards?

Anyway I'm liking the cards a lot, seems very solid for gigs and stuff, not sure if I'll bother with the HDD.

I removed theRAM panel and that looks exactly like a hard drive connector beneath it. I'm not sure how the panel would close with a connector on it though. Doesn't seem to be much space to plug anything in. So I doubt this is the connector that everyone else is talking about. Has anyone seen any source of hd power inside the box?

I haven't opened up my MPC yet. Can someone elaborate on the proper way of opening it without removing anything that doesn't need to be removed?

Has anyone tried showing pictures of the connectors to computer pros?

if you turn your mpc upside down but keep the front in front of you. you will see screws right up front. take them off. then look at the CF slot, you will see one screw there. remove it. the front panel pops open. there you will see a slot for a 2 1/2" drive.

the type of drive everyone is talking about is a laptop drive. laptop drives don't need external power like regular standard desktop IDE drives (from the power supply) laptop drives get their power from one of the pins.

Right on Sparq. Good looking out. Do laptop HDs have the same connectors as standard PC HDs? Do you know the connector I'm talking about that is next to the ram?

Why doesn't the pin look like something that would fit on a notebook HDD? looks a ton smaller in comparison to the standard drive interfaces

Eh, so it take Akai 18 months to test 3 drives?

i was wondering the same.... but whatever, at least there good to go.

ive been looking for a new toshiba drive and all i can find is reconditioned ones. do they make these anymore?

what about the seagate and fujitsu drives?

if laptop hdds are smaller than standard IDE drives, then yes the connector will be smaller than standard IDE connectors.

as far as where this drive is supposed to go and the connector there, that's what i'm going to find out about.

"why would my boy at akai tell me to just slide the drive right in. and the only thing that i would need to worry about is just something to hold it."

Umm, opened any laptops lately? Ever? Most every laptop vendor uses a proprietary drive/bay adapter (usually for each model). It not only provides the connection but also the support. There about as many drive/bay adapters as there are models of laptops. It's called vendor lock-in. When you want another drive caddy, you are pretty much forced to buy one at a premium price from your original vendor.

I am not sure if this was Akai's intention, but rather a side effect of the design (like the RAM). I would like to think that Akai Pro has either a large stock of these caddies available for sale or supply us with the vendor name and model for it. You can be pretty sure that whenever they do become available, they will be bought up by some of the Sample companies, who in turn will assemble and preload the drives with samples.

i stand corrected.

thanks 3k.

not to damage my credibility, i opened my mpc last night and took a closer look. and like you stated, the connectors on both are different sizes. so like i said in an earlier post above, i would call to find out exactly what is needed. and after asking the right questions, i received answers that might clear up some things.

part of the conversion kit that will become available for the drive is an adapter for the connectors of the drive and the 1k. in fact, it is the same kit that is going to be shipped with the 2500. and that kit will not become available (tentatively) until november when the 2500 is launched. in the meantime.

i hope this clears my name and my credibility.

and i've should have realized that, like you said, every laptop has its own proprietary caddy/chasis for their drives.

The(re) will be a kit available for installing the drives and possibly the hard drives will need to have a new OS upgrade. At this time we are waiting to hear back on this.

akai

you prolly knew this, oh well

OK guys, it has been hard but I eventually managed to find what kind of connector those nice people at AKAI put inside our MPCs.
It is a SCSI HD50 pins male connector (they love SCSI don't they??).
So basically, what we need is an adapter to convert that HD50 connector to a female 2.5" HDD connector.
I am currently browsing the internet, but any help would be most welcome...
In any case I'll let you know.
