You'd be surprised at how much grime can build up over the course of a couple weeks. I cover mine and you should see the film of dust and other **** that builds up on my dust covers. It's preventative maintenance. Unless you want to be opening up your machine every few months because something is malfunctioning due to dirt buildup, follow my advice.

I used to open my 2000 xl every 2 months and clean the pads. To see what builds up in 2 months is pretty gross.

Oh and Elmac, I just figured it would be nice an easy for the noobs, but after some deeper thoughts... I don't know many 3000 noobs :)
