sampling and chopping samples

Hello I have a 2000xl and I wanted to learn how to sample sounds and chop samples from records. I wanted to know could anyone tell me the additional equipment needed. Records are not the problem I just need some guidance..I'll appreciate any advice I can get...Please understand..I can make beats on my mpc I just can't sample and chop...yet. Thanks

set up your inputs and outputs on your mpc ...... read the manual how to sample ...... go into trim mode ...... hit zone .... select how mnay chops you want ...... edit your chops ...... assign the chops to pads then freak it

Manual. If you don't have one you can download a pdf copy.There is no great mystery to chopping samples. It is one of the basic things the MPC was designed to do & the manual gives you clear diagrams. That is why most people are going to say read the manual. You have already learnt how to make beats which I found far less straightforward than finding out what the "TRIM" button does. How did you learn this?

You don't need anything apart from the MPC to chop samples although it is quicker on a computer with a waveform editing program & you have the advantage of a bigger screen.

Turntable outs go into PHONO in on a DJ mixer (RCA L/R w/ground wire). Mixer outs go to the IN's on your MPC (depending on your mixer either RCA L/R or 1/4" L/R to 1/4" L/R).

Go to the sample screen (Shift and 4, I think). Play the record. Press record on the MPC. KEEP the sound. Go to TRIM mode, chop that sh!t, assign to pads, and get busy.

Yo lampdog I was looking at your gear you have an asr-10 triton extreme and a 2000xl...i have a motif es-6, G5 mac with protools, reasons and recycle, logic7 pro with no xskey, etc.... how do you get your keyboard to co-exist with your mpc, chopping, and sampling. Can you add sounds from your triton to the sampled beat on the mp?...... I have my own sound, I'm a drummer but can play keys...I'm tryin to learn some tricks from the veterans.....Thanks for all your help. Peace

I have nothing midi'd up, let me say that first. I prefer to use each machine standalone from song start to song finish (This is my way of trying to master each peice of gear standalone). But I have midi'd all 3 before, a few times actually, just to see what the fuss is all about. I chop and sample wherever I'm sitting at the time. If I'm at the computer I usually chop in Sound Forge.
If I'm working on my triton or 2kxl I'll chop the sample up in therel, I have a real procedure, I sample from everything and everywhere, and chop on each machine if need be.

Via midi, it's possible to trigger from another machine(s). And/or I can physically transfer sampled wavs sounds between my triton and mpc via CF (have a CF reader on both triton and 2kxl).

cool lampdog..it's still a little confusing but like you said I have to read the mpc manual and study. I guess for so long I've worked with other producers and I knew what I wanted to sample and chop or what drum sounds I wanted cause I can hear em in my head but lacked the technical prowess that they had...they were able to put my ideas into action...i gotta step my game up..... thanks much..I'll be hollerin at ya.Peace

Yo it's Beaglin. I wanted to start building some sounds because my drum kits for the mpc are lacking. When sampling drums, hats, kicks, etc what's the best practical way to do it and how do I save the sounds to my mpc or the pads for further use. second I have a scsi zip drive..I've been having problems with the partitions..a guy gave me some wav files that he saved onto a zip for my mpc...I was loading them into pads but couldn't apply the partition things to get all the sounds. When he formats them for his pc things are cool but aren't I supposed to format the zip in the mpc to get the partitions..I hope I'm not confusing you. I'm tryin to get the sounds. Lastly,do you have a link for downloading the mpc manual. Look forward to hearing from you. peace
