mpc 60 mk1 shipped w/ black tape round the edge of the face?

Did the akai mpc 60 mk1's ship with blake tape around the metal face plate?


Mine has this pretty heavy duty black tape that goes around the metal front part of the 60 and it looks like it goes underneath it too. I thought the black tape was metal at first but its not. Visually to me it kinda makes the mpc 60 look slimmer.

Honestly I'd email Roger Linn and ask, but it looks like it would be a factory job since it looks like one peice of tape in the shape of the U.

I wouldn't take it off unless it really bugs you, thats pretty unique.

i'm not going to rip off the tape cause i don't want to clean that residue afterwards

Black tape?? No that is not suppose to be there. I am guessing that an individual replaced the 'foil' inside the LCD screen. And didn't know how to put it back together again, lost some parts,...or probably just taped it because it was too much trouble to put it back together again...

I made the mistake in trying to change an LCD on an old MPC 3000 of mine a few years back. I didn't know I had to do some sodering..I almost ruined that joint. Didn't get a good connection so the LCD went on and off when ever it felt like...I sent it to Akai Japan and the fixed it for $100 and returned it to me in 3 days....

I agree, I wouldn't mes with the tape. And send it to VST service if you have problems with it (if you live in the USA).

There is no black tape around the display, that is th plastic. The black tape is around the edge of the metal. It looks like it is supposed to be there.

Yeah replacing the El Foil or LCD is easy but the inexperienced can have problems, also the 3000 is harder to open up than the 60's or 2000's IMO.

I knew you would reply to that. Yes, I am in-experienced with replacing that darn foil inside the MPC 3000. I would never attempt that again. I am a military leader/MPC hustler/Hobbyist..not a tech nerd or anything like that..I don't even change the oil in my car. When my MPCs act up..I send them to professionals that I have good relationships with.

And the MPC 3000 foil replacement is not easy if you have never donw that before. Opening it and sodering it is easy (I suck at sodering) but putting it back together is a challenge. In fact, Roger Linn or who ever the guys name was who designed the hardware (since Akai had nothing to do with anything ) didin't design the MPC 3000 to be fixed by changing the foil. The LCD was sold as a complete assembly. When the LCD burned out, you had to replace the entire assembly.

I have never seen any black tape on the MPC 60. That is what the gentleman said. I didn;t know it was up for interpretation.

And you are smoking crack by saying the MPC 3000 is harder to open than the 2000s. 2000XL yes...MPC 2000...hell naw! You have to go through all kinds of changes to open up the MPC 2000 and put it back together again. This I can do. Opening the MPC 3000 is a piece of cake. Naw..I don't do that. I effectively lead by setting the example and my troops love me for that. Almost 16 years in and another 4 to go until retirement and my life pension Then I can stay in the forums and talk shiznit all day and buy every new MPC that comes out..just because.

You clearly misunderstood what was being discussed and started talking about screens, which was not what we are talking about. You may have never seen a 60 if you think that's black tape around the display, but cheers for trying to be helpful.

I have helped many people not make the mistakes you talk about with the El foil, and i'd even help you, if you needed it, but somehow you're the expert.
