When I first heard about this I was excited. But now that I think about it. Why would I want a hard drive in my MPC1000?
I mostly just use it as a one-hit drum sampler and as a sequencer for external gear. I have a one gig CF card that ain't full yet. It loads pretty quick. I have GIGS of drum samples and loops but why would I want to wade through all that stuff on the MPC1000 tiny screen?
I guess I could dump a bunch of samples on the hard drive instead but I don't see that happening. I use that great BlueBox program. Unless Akai ports that to the MPC1000 :).
I record to my computer too.
I can't think of any reason to have a hard drive in the MPC1000.
Why is everyone so excited about this? I must be missing something.

Me personally I would rather spend a $100 on a 40gig hd, insteead of $100 on 1gig smart media card. Plus I could keep everything on the hard drive (full on vinyl samples, drum hit, issh like that). so 40 1 gig cf cards would= $3,280 (at $82 a piece), compared to one 40 gig hard drive=$75 from newegg. Plus wouldn't have to go back and forth from your computer to your mpc. Unitl you wanted to track things out, or if you wanted to edit something on your pc, and then throw it back into your 1k. I think its going to be really helpful.

1 - the simple fact that it would show that akai still has plans for it. admit it, it's there.

2 - i would love to have all my often used sample programs (ie drums and bass) ready to access on the mpc without dropping them onto the card again and again - and use the flash card just to import timestretched and zoned samples from my daw.

3, you could save your songs on the hd....

the convenience aspect to it is nice. you could load a huge amount of stuff and trek out to some public library and just chill there making beats for hours...

don't think it 's a good idea..to put a hard drive in an MPC

playing with the pads a bit to strong might be very dangerous for the HD...
just have a look at the laptops...try to shake it one when power on ....and see...

in a compact flash there is no mecanical piece ....

sorry for my poor english ....
that's just my opinion....

viruses?....hahaha do u even know what a virus is? for even to have an affect on a MPC it would have to be purposely coded to affect it..so a normal pc virus would not have any clue on a mpc..

hopefully akai will also change the way the files are ordered.
at the moment it is not by alphabetic order but by date i think. so with 40gb of samples, might be a bit difficult to find stuff on it.

and also the fact that you cannot preview the samples from disk (without loading it first) makes me browse the my samples on the pc anyway.

+ the vibrations issues.

3 reasons for me not to bother with the hard disk.

may be usefull for people with very long accapella and big multisample instrument. and it may be faster to load than SM even.

the vibrations wont be much of an issue since the hard drive only spins when its writing or reading informantion. and also there laptop hard drives wich are better engineerd against vibration and shock. i mean shit man how hard do you hit the pads? what are you a meat hooked savage? lol;)

Vibrations?....HD?.....

Hmmm....Should everyone take the Hard Disks out of their 4000s?

Reasons to use a HD:

1. Don't have to edit much on a computer. Sometimes when I need to travel, I can drop a few gigs of samples on the drive and just take the MPC (and not the laptop). When I feel like working, I can chop and arrange programs right on the MPC itself. Even write a few beats.

2. Convenience. Sometimes when I an working on a song, I get would think that "xxxSAMPLExxx would sound great right here". I can immediately load up the new sound from the HD and try it out. The alternative is to find it on the PC (maybe even have to first load from CD), find it, put it on CF and transfer to the MPC.

I would not worry about the shock to the HD's. Most laptop drives are guaranteed longer than desktop drives (desktop drives do not get "moved", laptop ones do). One major laptop manufacturer just announced that they are extending their warranty from 5 to 6 years.

In most systems, hard drive transfer rate is much faster than solid state drives. the only caveat here is that the host controller needs to have unused capacity. That is, if the host is already transferring as fast as it can, faster drives will not make a difference. The capacity of the MPC1000's host controller is not known at this time, but I do suspect there is some performance gains to be allowed by the use of hard drives.

I look forward using a drive in the MPC1000 since I have a long history of pioneering drive installations in equipment:
My MPC3000 hard drive mod
My MPC2000XL hard drive mod
Akai S2000, S3000XL hard drive mods
E-mu Esi hard drive mod

I just can't believe that for once that a company is actaully going to make it EASY to put a hard drive in a sampler yet people will still balk at the idea.

MPC3000...Strange world, ain't it?

It just seems like that of all the "requests" I've heard from MPC1K users the request of "Please Akai give us the ability to put in a hard drive" ain't even in the top ten.
The only benefit I can see is that perhaps it will require an OS update and maybe that OS update will have some new features.
As far as I'm concerned I don't have any bugs in the way I use my MPC1K so I'm not looking for any bugfixes.
I am looking for new features. So my "balking" at this new feature comes from the fact that as far as I'm concerned it adds very little value to the way I use my MPC1K. I'm sure others will disagree but let's face it, ain't that what message boards are for? :D
Things I would prefer instead of a hard drive.
1. Track volume adjustment. (instead of just "pad" volume)
2. delay effect
I'm sure others have their own list (for example the "chop" and "reverse" lobby)
Also there is a slight bottom line issue: in order for me to use this new feature I have to open up the old wallet.
