How do they make beats like this?

What kind of timing or whatever do they use to do tracks like this? This is really different. I couldnt get into it right away because of the pattern. But its different. Anyone can shed some light on this?

Sounds like it is programmed in 5/8 instead of 4/4, but it could be a sample played on a 5 bars sequence. The best way to figure that out is to experiment. try messing with the time signature on the MPC. Reminds me of early Lenny White tracks with a similar that time signature - i think it's really cool, but it would likely scare off the average MC.

possible idea - probably had some hi hats or something in there when putting it together (to help producer and mc count and do there thing) and then taken out at the mix stage.

U can do this in 4/4 time, u gotta be imaginative though.
Also try 8/8 time.

Have I done it before, yes, have I completed a WHOLE song like this before, no, cause it's not my style and chose to abandon it.

its no trick to it, listening to the hi-hat it sounds liks it was done in 4/4 and the guy just played with it a bit.

it just sounds like the beginning of the sequence dosnt start with a kick like a beat normally does. it sounds like it starts with a hat. and the beginning is kind of off. it comes a little before the start of a normal sequence. i dont know how to explain it. i guess i can try to play around with the time sig thing. i never really got into changin that much. plus when i ever changed the time sig it never held after the first bar...it always changes back

This could be composed on any machine...

but MPC wise, it could be two different sequences.... two different time signatures, accents etc.

You don't always have to start a seq on 001.01.01 You can start a seq on anything else ie, when you press start nothing plays until like 004.04.04.

Just thing outside the box a tad and you'll start to understand it more clearly. Experiment with the drums starting and stopping at different times than you normally would. You don't even HAVE to change from 4/4 if you don't want. Just make sure you use high resolution so you can get those odd pad bangs where you want them or just go timing off wit it.

sounds like 2 patterns, one played with the normal snares on 2 and 4 and the second pattern with the snare on 1 and 3

also, when changing the time sig make sure to make it for as many bars as you want it. For example, if you have a 4 bar seq make sure to change the Bar values to say 1 - 4, it defaults to 1 - 1

the whole thing goes 4/4, but its just a little more complicated.
