Prah, ric rok sequences and does drums on a mpc60 according to my ***** out here who works in artist management (Bay Area "g" shit) and in the last Element magazine they got a picture of Ayatollah and his MPC60 (doesnt sound like he uses much more than a MPC60 and maybe a s950 or another Akai rack piece). That article is dope I wish I had it.

peace mang.

Dare Iz A Darkside was done with the 60, plus an s950. That's the only reason i'd ever consider the 60 -- If an album of that calibur can be made on it? Sheeeeeeeeit.

Primo obviously abandoned the 60 for his last effort, for the record.

Instead of stepping backwards through time, I suggest you follow some of these cats' advice and seek out an alternative. You stepping back to the 60 is like asking someone to step back to one of those old nappy 486 computers.

I don't know about everyone else, but making beats is something I do as a side ting until I can put more time into it and move it to the next level. It doesn't pay my bills. My 9-5 is working at an electronic service depot servicing...electronic musical instruments; among those, the MPCs that we all use. The 60 is already over 10 years old, and I fear for those that have one...take care of it well and maintain it, cause once it goes faulty, you can feel free to dash it in the nearest garbage can. Parts cannot be replaced, only repaired. And you don't want to know what the labor bill is gonna be like for fixing that.

You don't move backwards with anything electronic. That's the rule. Your 2000 is just fine. Here is something I did to achieve dirty sound. I had an old Roland VP-9000 with all the capacitors burnt up (lightning strike). That unit was like $4Gs when it came out. I soldered in some replacement caps and BAM...$20.00 for a resurrected VP processor. The thing has 50 effects inside, among those...a bit converter for downsampling (allows you to control everything from sample rate to filtering etc.). you can find old VPs for like $400 now.

I don't have a flexible budget where I can keep swapping gear like a stickshift, and I don't think most of us do. You have to be smart about your selections. Everything you got is an investment. Stop following what this man is using and what that man is using. I ain't them...you ain't them. I use what I know how to use, so should you.

Even the masters got to change their gear sometime. For the pros, learning curves cost money, that's why most of them use antiquated gear like a 60. They know it, they use it, they don't have time to learn new stuff. Each day they spend with lack of knowledge costs money. That is until they come to a repair man like me and I perform the last rites on their gear. Then they MUST learn a new piece of gear.

Someone said something about the change of quality in manufacturing from then to now. That doesn't apply here, this stuff is made in Japan (check your boxes). Very strict quality controls. Japanese companies don't fire workers. The bad worker gets lick down and karate chop right there in the factory...brushed off, cleaned up and put right back on the assembly line again. (A little humor still)

Big up Swissmaster, MPC_Pro and Prah, they got the right idea; it ain't the gear, it's the user. If you really want to modify your sound, you could without shifting gear out. Improvise. The sampling to tape is a wicked way to do that. (It slipped my mind for a second)

I humbly apologize for the short story here, but this is the straight goods. Research your alternatives, find a solution, there's nuff workarounds out there. My personal advice, score a VP-9000. It is perhaps the best piece of cheap processing gear out there still.

Take heart, the Shadow knows.

Highest respect to all seen.

I don't understand why people want there music to sound like everyone else...I just don't get it...do something original and you will be rewarded for it.... Dont spend endless hours trying to recreate someone elses sound....

i dont know if you doods are aiming your comments towards me, but my point in naming popular artists that still use mpc60s was to illustrate that the machine is not void just cause of its age and good music has nothing to do with technology (seems to be the prevailing train of thought round here), especially hip hop music. and just cause the mpc60/3000 ARE bettter machines than the 2000XL doesnt mean yall have to get super sensitive. damn, seriously.

shit, im just happy to have the same tools as the pros. 1.

Ahhhhhh.....There you go again saying that the 60 & 3000 are better than the 2Kxl.....Jeez....It 'aint better, Its different, It sounds different, Looks different, Opperatets differently.... I mean for christs sake, if all you wanna do is make HIP HOP then it doesn't really matter what you got, Its such a simplistic style of music anyway.....But, to make I'll sounding HIP HOP be it commercial sytles or otherwise, is a totally subjective thing...Is the MPC 60 gonna make "better" beats than something else...."NO it aint" if you know your machine inside and out, be it an AKAI, or EMU or YAMMAHA your gonna be able to do Mad stuff with it!!!! Especially, if you consider what you are trying to achive Sonically, and include this in your approach with extra bits of gear hear and there, eg: Tube Pre-amp, Distortion, Tape Delay., etc., etc., Personally, I find my MPC and IDEAS machine more than anything else...If I was gonna record something professionally I would stay away from it at the production stage...!!!

Now, I do understand that Traditionally HIP HOP has been a sample based music, but "Stuff that its 2003". Everyone should be opening up to new Ideas' and it appears to me that HIP HOP is actually moving in this direction. If I was to make a HIP HOP track (I don't Im into my Drum & Bass, but the production is surprisingly simular just double the tempo) Here is what I would do... Hire out a Studio for a Day with a Real DW Maple Drum Kit and Bash out a Wide variety Beats and Record them into some serious Solid State Valve Pre-amps and take it home on a CD, Chop it up into Loops and Hits then wack it in my 2kxl fiddle with it till Ive constructed the song into the patterns I wan't . Then I would Dump the Midi of those sequences into Pro-Tools then re-arrange all my recorded hits dumped into Pro-Tools to avoid the quality Loss your gonna get when you record something from the MPC so those precious beats sound clean and crisp...

THE MADDNESS IS IN THE METHOD...

Not to rain on anybody... but I agree with DOVESKI. Those machines (3000, 60, 60mkII, S950) are as timeless as the records they were used to produce. Gear never goes out of fashion, there's people who still use original MOOGs. But it's a fact, the gear won't make your beats better, it's the creativity and talent of the user. I use the MPC2000, and although my stuff could be dirtier, I find ways to "dirty it up". If you must go 12 bit though, you are better off getting an S900 or better yet an S950, the S950 has nasty filters. I met JuJu from THE BEATNUTS like 2 years ago in Queens in a record shop, and he told me he uses the MPC2000 and an S950. By the way Ayatollah uses the MPC60, I read an article in STRESS a couple years back. Your gear preference is your own, just like your opinion, I just wanted to shed some light if it helps any... I'm even confusing myself now... but there's ways to make your 16 bit sampler sound dirty without tons of plug ins or expensive older gear. But an S900 would cost you like 100 to 200 bucks and an S950 would cost from 150 to 350 if you MUST have a 12 bit sampler. The S900 was the exact same sampling engine in the MPC60... and sequence it with your newer MPC... if you MUST have it...

I got both 2kXL and 60 and I'm very happy with both and the combination of em. If you have to pay 200 for the 60, I'd say, keep your 2000 and save a lil mo money to also get the 60, it should be possible to find one for around 500$.
