I definitely consider myself more of a producer that has a small amount of musician in him...
I love getting REAL musicians into the studio and recording....don't really care what, either.. Done a little Hip-hop, most of which was terrible because of the MCs involved, and MOSTLY live acts. I recorded a metal band for awhile, but broke it off because the drummer and the bassist were complete a$$holes. The Bassist used to be a good friend...maybe there's a reason you're not supposed to work with friends when it comes to business...
The only REALLY successful project I've worked on lately was producing a demo for a (semi) local singer/guitarist. She's amazing, but also is the one that pulled my brother in to the world of crank....so I kinda have mixed feelings. Like I said in the "Pissed Off" thread, though...it's all on him as far as I'm concerned. She might have opened the door, but he didn't have to walk through. No steel to his head...just the draw for really really sh!tty crank. I had my phase, but at least it was really good ice...still not good, but it was really pure...the stuff he gets is all yellow and nasty, but I digress...
I recorded a 4 track demo for her (for free....dammit) and threw in a nice instrumental at the end. Everyone that's heard it is blown away. I think that's more because of her talent than mine, but I DID get down to the editing individual syllables level on a couple takes.
Hmmm.....maybe I'm sort of less producer and more scout/engineer/tape op. Either way, I still can't work with other producer types. It drives me insane. If I can put someone in front of the keys and let them just jam and record it and chop it all later, I'm happy. Of course, I spend a lot of time behind my MP too....it all just depends. Hmmm.....another long post about nothing. I think maybe THAT'S where my talent lies...
