Maybe Obvious to some: Why do DJs Use an MPC?

Trying to understand why when I see photos of DJ in there studios do they have an MPC? It looks as if they are running a computer sequencer to do the trick, and I'm sure that they would slice up any samples on the computer. And I've never seen a DJ play with an MPC live. So why do DJs use an MPC?

to trigger certain parts during there set. I have seen pleny of DJ rock a MPC 1000 and 2000 on stage. They have certain parts of there set that they need to just trigger sounds. I have even seen a advertimsent be triggerd from a MPC. It all depends on how creative the DJ wants to be.

u can use it to trigger video clips too .. an mpc is for the dj, the vj, the producer, the musician & .......

Yeah, I guess I can see that. I was thinking of the MPC as mainly a sampler and I was thinking that it doesn't have nearly enough sample time to load up cool loops and mix them all together for a live set, or does it?

in the 1k it has about 24min of sample time in mono. I mean thats more than enough loops and audio phase and even a few 30 sec advertiments can fit into there.

for DJ use, the mpc is great for running phrases.

I used my 2000LX on saturday for a charity event for playing back short phrases.

Most dance music was created by DJs. House to Trance you name it was created by DJs from back in the day using simply samplers, drum machines, synth and whatever at hand. Also alot of DJs make exclusive only tracks and their own club remix for their sets and get the dubplate printed up so they don`t necessary have to fool around with alot of gear on stage just records and two turntables. Remember alot of dance music wasn`t created by traditional trained musicians, rather by dance and club djs.

Musicians play; however, DJs make the world go round. Many People seem to have forgetten this.

For sure it's about using what you got and making the most of it. I appreciate the tip about making the dub plates. Great idea. the next sequence function seems so intuitive for mixing it's ridiculously cool, to go in and out of sequences. It is difficult getting down the minimal beat and building it up into a symphony. It seems like it has to be pre-arranged somewhat.

Anyways just brainstorming really...

i dj and i use it to store samples and trigger them in the intro of my set or in the middle. and the time is long if you use the 32mb chip. i aslo store in my zip drive so when i need to i just pull up a sample,

when making beats i try to make them dj friendly so i can mix in and out of them.

Well, the 4000 has a lot of sample time....


also, if you using it to trigger samples and not necarrily having the sequencer going, there
is no reason, you can't load up more samples , as your decks will be playing while your loading...

so even if you're using a 2000XL with 32M, you can just load up another 32M when you've used the 32M that you are currently using..
