Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

Sorry if this has already been covered before guys, I try and keep question posts to a minimum and have searched the forum for an answer to the above but with little joy.

Basically I have everything in my home studio setup as I want apart from my MPC. The way I am currently making beats is MPC 1K for the drums, then v-Synth XT + Various VST's in Cubase SL3 for the lead / other layers.

Now I am finding that I am "stupidly" shunning the MPC more and more in favour of using reason in a re-wire combo with cubase as I can get tracks down that much quicker, due to the lack of clock sync with the MPC.

I will cut to the chase, I have the MPC wired via spdif / midi, sometimes I use it as a midi controller in Cubase so is there anyway to get the MPC to sync with cubase when I am recording / playing back midi??? Also more importantly when I am using samples in the mpc and then exporting audio not midi into cubase, again is there anyway to sync the record button on the mpc with the record in on cubase so that everything is to bar without me having to fiddle about afterwards???

Again sorry if this has been covered, I am just getting peed at searching for the answer + if the above isn't possible if anyone could lend any workflow tips that would be great.

Many Thanks, Nate ;)

Ok...I got midi clock turned on in Cubase. I got sync setup on MPC so that external MIDI clock will sync the MPC. I've turned on pass through on the MPC. This is my MIDI setup below.

PC MIDI out -> MPC MIDI in 1
MPC MIDI out A -> PC MIDI in
MPC MIDI out B -> Triton MIDI in
Triton MIDI out -> MPC MIDI in 2

In Cubase...when I press play the MPC will play and sync to the current BPM set in Cubase. Also the Triton Keyboard can be recorded into the MPC or passed through into cubase to control soft synths.

My workflow is this:

1. Use MPC as main sequencer. Drums and MIDI are done on the mpc.
2. The Triton is my main keyboard for keys and playing melodies.
3. Once I have a basic track down... I set a 2 or 4 bar loop in Cubase, arm a track, select mixer channel on external mixer (triton, sampler, mpc) and press record in Cubase.
4. A perfect 2 or 4 bar loop is recorded. Usually I just solo tracks on the MPC and record each one individually.
5. Once they are in the computer I can lay out the track, apply efx etc.

Using the MPC like this works really well and is fast. You can sequence all your softsynths on the MPC rather than Cubase by selecting the right MIDI channel.

Hope this helps

Ok you got me man, I was after some workflow tips too though, so that makes everythin cool I reckon :) lol

Also thanks for the tips sumedho, some good advice!!!

So far I have managed to control my MPC from Cubase i.e Record, Play etc, but unfortunately I cannot control these similar functions from my MPC. So when I click record then start playing away on the MPC, nothing seems to move in the cubase screen.

Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong??? Really appreciate your help so far guys, really really appreciate it!!! ;)

Before I get ANGRY with you..for not knowing the principles of midi etc... and not reading your MPC1000 Manual..

Press MODE 9, F2(SYNC), Sync Out to A or B,

This will work providing you have setup Cubase to recieve a MIDI CLOCK signal...rumour has it that CUBASE does not work well as a SLAVE.

Any need for a quote like that Penfold??? Who says I don't understand Midi & who says I haven't read my MPC manual??? For the record I understand mini and have read the MPC manual fully over the past 6 months. Not gonna stoop to the level of others and respond to negative comments with further negative stuff but I would ask that you refrain from making these sorts of statements unless you know for a fact that this is the case! Anyway enough said and its forgotten about :)

Back on topic I understand this part, that is why my MPC is working with Cubase currently (as stated above) but only with the MPC as a slave to Cubase.

This is the part I am struggling with (Cubase) recieving the midi clock signal from the MPC, thus the reason I asked the question any further advice from this point as the rest I have sorted.

Hopefully as sumedho already has his setup working as I would like, perhaps he could suggest something, i.e a setting in Cubase that needs changing (I have followed the manual posted in the link BTW but with no joy).

dont get upset blud!!!!

as far as I am concered, if you did understand midi, and read ya manual you would not need to be asking for help...you should just be abled to do it.

but like you said "Anyway enough said and its forgotten about"

hope u figure it out...

bare in mind, I'm not a rude person, just a straight n blunt person...so dont take it to heart...its only the internet.

Ok mate its cool, but for the record Im no fool, got the midi part sorted fairly easily just cant figure the cubase side out + the Steinberg manual is not very clear at all :(

You didn't upset me mate so don't worry and as I have always said I appreciate your comments, just felt they were a little harsh earlier on in the thread considering that the idea of a forum was to ask for help once all else fails (which it had), anyways the air is clear and it was no big deal mate ;)

Im gonna try and call Steinberg today to see if infact SL3 is capable of playing slave to the MPC, I will report my findings once I have a response from them. In the meantgime if anyone has any further ideas please feel free to post them, I would greatly appreciate any further help :)

Nate :)

Edit; Just phoned the UK Cubase helpline (020 8207 7888), apparently unless I want to spend a fair bit of money getting "world clock" equipment, plus some other bits and bobs??? The only way I can sync my MPC to Cubase is the way it is, Cubase as the master and the MPC as the slave :(

Unfortunately like most technical service staff they had a tendancy to baffle me with a whole host of jargan and eventually I just accepted that perhaps the way I have it setup is the way it will have to remain which is a shame as I am halfway to having it setup the way I want :(

Any further insight would be fantastic, Nate ;)

I'd like to know why this can't be done....is it still not possible no matter what kind of spec you got?

I'm using the Midi Time Code to sync the MPC with the computer with the MPC as slave...but it would be usefull if I could do it the other way around too..

Bless.
