how do yall go about chopping samples since we dont have a zone feature.....never tried it but im thinkin i could past the sample to different pads and edit each one, but isnt there a more efficient way, like a program.....

extract-been mentioned a million times before........

to chop really quick

highlight the number in the chop screen

hold

shift + < cursor key

and it moves your number spot by 10's 100's 1000's ect.

then just chop and extract shit. no need for zoning. but it would be faster.

I've heard there's some PC app out now that will chop samples for you (one click chopped+screwed music basically) but that kinda takes the fun out of it doesn't it. Recycle's great for breaking down loops and would work well for chopping samples too, but I like djobserv's recommendation...you don't have to leave the MPC :-D

you don't have to leave the MPC

while this may be nice when you're taking the mpc for a stroll, there is nothing wrong with working outside of one's mpc - especially for sample chopping.

if the 1k is ever able to be seen via usb as an external hard drive, one would be able to use the computer as an extension of the mpc. even if cards and stuff will always be used, i'd rather edit on recycle anyway. the program is spectacular.

oh yeah no doubt nothing wrong with chopping in or out of the mpc. i just like to work with mpc strightly while my computer sits 4 inches away from it. hahaha

I actually use the free BeatSlicer that came with my fl studio, it automatically slices up samples for me into individual hits, sometimes it chops strange portions of the sample into a one hit, but that produces unique sounds that i can use sometimes.

Cap - you care to elaborate on how you go about chopping? please get into as much detail as you can

I'll add to it, but I dont' want to give away 2 many secrets. 1st off I don't chop drum break in the MPC, use recyle you can get a lot done with drums real quick there.

When I'm sampling I like to really just look for sounds. That hold for a little longer than a hit. Then I take a few of those sounds and put them down the pads. then I put them on the pads across and pitch them up or down. I also look for strings and basses and other sounsd that will fit it. Like stings for the highs and horns for the middles and then I filter those sounds to where they should fit. add drums add play around with the chops.

For loops they jump out when you start just looping ish. Then as you practice more and more, better loops tend to jump out at you. But a key I have been learing is to have banging drums to make your tracks move.

Same here. I used to chop my samples in Sound Forge but now I do it all in MPC even faster. The advantage of chopping samples in the MPC is you can press the pads while you are adjusting the start and end points allowing you to hear exactly where you are trimming the sample. In a waveform editor you have adjust the start/end point then press play. Zoning would be faster but I'm getting pretty good at the extracting feature.

the beat slicer is dope!i used that a lot.
one thing though u can transfer the chop parts or convert them to pgm file.
u gottta sample them one by one into the mpc unlike recycle.
anyways i use the beat slicer everytime :D

Yeah, I should go back to the oldskool way of chopping...
