fades for one hit drums

my question might be fairly easy but here goes anyway.
when chopping up a loop for example a snare drum. and the snare you chop up does not have enough space at the end of the hit to sound good because of some other sound right after it, what is the best way to add some decay or space to the snare to make it sound better? make it sound like it was not cut off too early? this would greatly help me out. thanx...

uh... use the envelope to decrease the decay time?

yeah but i mean like adding air on to the end? how is that accomplished and then how do you blend the two? you know?

Blend it by ear, and use decay to make a smooth envelope.

Depends on what you chop it with. If you slice it with the MPC2000XL, then the MPC adds 30 msec [can be overridden] of silence at the ends of the samples to account for the built in decay of the amp envelope. If you you chop it manually in an computer editor, then you might want to add this yourself. If not the MPC can prematurely shorten the samples.

If you import Recycle AKP file, then the MPC Editor automatically adds this bit of silence to the samples to emulate the MPC operation.

If you still do not like the sample ending, you could get in there and create a loop point on a short section of the ending and set the decay appropiately to extend the `length` of the sample.

is this only on the 2k? how do you overwrite it?

Go to where you sampled the snare from and sample some 'air'. Or turn the rec level up on your MPC and sample nothing(noise)...Add to taste!

Slice? No, only on the XL.

no the 30ms? is that only for slice?

but how do you add the air? using step edit? do you then resample it ort am i on the wrong path altogether?

Yes, this is only added for slicing (which is on the MPC2000XL).

In additon:

I sometimes find myself having to add this 30 msec of silence manually to samples:

1) flip to sample screen
2) sample nothing for a fraction of a second
3) temporarily assign new sample to a pad
4) go to trim for new sample
5) trim to about 1500 samples in length
6) Change START to 0
7) Go to EDIT
8) Select Insert Sound before Start
9) Select original sample that needed the blank
10) Do it.

I think you can do something simliar on the MPC3000/60, by copying the original sample into TEMP and placing that `Before Zn Start` in the Edit screen for the blank sample. I have not tried it.
