MPC for dance punk/indie rock?

Ok, lets see. if notice many of the folks posting are using the MPC for House, techno, and of course......Hip Hop, R&B, and Rap, understandably. But what if, just what if, I was a indie/punk rock kid who wants some great dance beats and plain "real" sounding drum kits too? Sure, I know the MPC's are "What you sample into it is what you get!" and that awesome. That's what makes me think this could be a better way to go than some cheesy dance machine or drum machine. Anyone out there have any advice?

Go for it! MPC will work for all styles...

Can you recommend a model? I was going to go with the 4000 but now I hear about the 2500.......hmm. i guess they both do the same thing right?

go read up on the specs, and go to a store and flowers with them, youll figure out which one you want. I cant recommend the 4k or the 2500 because ive never used them.


but yeah get an mpc, and let me hear your music man! I can get down to punk rock.

I used to make DNB on mine.. then i moved onto sort of downbeat stuff... but i also do some indie/electro sort of stuff... i always go for the real-est sounding drums i can... but i sample my guitar and keys into the MPC and do nearly everything on it.. although i have a computer i try and limit myself to working within the MPC.. sometimes i run samples out and through my pedals and racks and into my computer. But then i put them back onto the mpc.

Awsome, that sounds alot like what I want to do. What "real" sounding drums do you use? Did you sample them yourself or did you get a sample disk or something? was sampleing the guitar and keys easy for you? My 4K coming in a couple weeks and I can't wait.

I sample nearly all of my drums off either records or cd's of bands i like the sound of.. heads up.. the latest two tracks i been working on sampled the drums of a UK band called little barrie.. they have a few songs with clean drum breaks.. the production on the drums is awesome.. sounds really old school like 70's drums or something.. and then i just slice them up into the individual hits and write my own stuff.. my latest track sounds so much like a real drummer.. well i think so anyways...

the guitars and keys (and turntables or whatever) i sample in takes a little time.. some people might think its the long way.. but i like doing it like this.. i dump a loop of the current song that i have onto my computer// say the 8 bars i want guitar on.. then i got to the sampling section of the MPC and get my levels right.. then i loop the loop on the computer and start playing the guitar into the MPC. That way im using the loop off the computer like a click track.. Then i just edit the guitar or keys in the sampler start dropping them into my track..

im sure some people would think im going about it the long way... but my computer is cr@p and i cant really build much of a song on it before it starts freaking.. and i like the limitations that the MPC puts on my work.. stops me screwing around for hours and hours over some plugin on the puter and getting carried away... i guess whatever works for you...

man if your getting a 4k.. that should totally kick @rse.. just spend loads of time experimenting with it.. and have fun... you can do so much with these machines when you really put some good time in learning them...

dont know if you know the band from texas called spoon... but they used a 4k on their recent album... i looked at the photos on their website and they have a few pics of it.. and also it had the mixing settings for most songs and they MPC on nearly every one...

Interesting. Yeah, I plan on experimenting my ass off. I have a bit of a time crunch as I've pre written a number of the tunes and I have to re-record/sample them using the 4k. Its going to be a daunting task but one I hope will help for live shows and a record. I hope this investment will turn out to be a wise one as I ultimately using the 4k a as virtual band so to speak. I have to sample my bass, guitar, and keys and then sequence them with real sounding drums. As I said, daunting.
