Got my S950, please help me investigate

so the dude said the memory was fully expanded...but it's not, @ 512 Kwords, that's the stock memory_______>correct me if I'm wrong

also, I don't know if it's got the SCSI option or not, on the back it has the RS-232C port which I know isn't SCSI...BuT it does have another thing that says Optical>Digital Audio Input and a connector that says Hard Disk....I don't know if this is the SCSI option or the other thing for the Atari drive I was reading on.

If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it

also how do you know how long to set the sample time? it's measured in mS which is milliseconds? I dunno, it's confusing me

well if it doesnt say scsi, then it might have this symbol which means scsi

I sent the email to the dude who lives in St. Louis, not too far from me and Ill see what he says. hopefully I'll get a refund and this time just get an ASR rack that for sure has SCSI

Just to confirm, 512 Kwords is stock memory in the S950. Hope you're not out too much loot, it's a really great machine. As for setting the ms for sampling you'll just have to play with it, you'll start to get a feel for it after a while. With the right amount of bandwidth and sample trim I've been able to get two beats on one disk with memory left over, so don't fret too much about the memory. Good luck.

512Kwords is stock(750KB)... 1024Kwords is with 1 MEMORY EXPANSION upgrade installed(1.5MB)... 1536Kwords is with 2 MEMORY EXPANSION upgrades installed(2.25MB)...

you may have either SCSI(akai expansion board IB-109) or ATARI HD(akai expansion board IB-105) connection, both have the OPTICAL and COAXIAL DIGITAL INPUTS i believe(i could be wrong, but the SCSI board has these 2 DIGITAL INPUTS for sure), but both are EXTREMELY RARE expansion boards! the only thing that sucks about the ATARI HD(akai expansion board IB-105) is that it only takes two model ATARI HDs... the ATARI HD(akai expansion board IB-105) will ONLY work with these 2 HDs: both ATARI HDs part number SH-204 and SH-205... there is also an ATARI "SUPRA" HD that may work, all of these ATARI HDs are either 20MB or 40MB HDs... the S950 will ONLY recognize 60MB of HD space(if i remeber correctly)... with a SCSI board(akai expansion board IB-109) you may use any STORAGE device that adheres to the SCSI protocol, BUT, the S950 will ONLY recognize the first 60MB of ANY drive! both the SCSI(akai expansion board IB-109) and the ATARI HD(akai expansion board IB-105) should be labeled with its respective PART NUMBER in the upper righthand corner of the expansion board... good luck...

I really wish I got a s950 with scsi. I don't think I will ever find the scsi board and without it the s950 is significantly less useful . Be warned - buy your 950 with scsi!

SCSI isnt really necessary, its nice yes, necessary? NO! its SCSI capacity or limit is 60MB, roughly 40 floppy disks... with a few floppies and a lil patience, you CAN ACHIEVE THE SAME RESULTS! it just may take a bit longer to save and load them... SCSI is extremely rare on an S950, be prepared to pay SIGNIFICANTLY more for a SCSI expanded S950...

I agree SCSI is nice but imagine having 10 tracks worth of samples on a Zip disk and bam... disk dies. Sometimes floppies are nice because they are smaller in capacity. If you do get SCSI just remember to back up that drive! Oh and if you find a SCSI card for the S950 you will have to update your EPROMs to the version that supports it. If you are lucky you will find one with SCSI that isn't dead.

Floppy drives will eventually die and be near impossible to replace , at least for a reasonable price. (In my experience)

But a hardrive will be easily replaced and of course much faster.

I really don't like floppy disks.
