what's the point of the CDRW?

I mean If I connect the MPC4000 to a laptop with a CD Burner is there any point in having the onboard burner? Does it save time or what?

The MPC4000 has a feature whereby the entire MPC memory can be saved to the internal CDR-/RW. You can also sample using the internal drive. No external hardware is necessary. Drop in an Audio format sample CD. You can sample directly from it.

okay, but does it do anything I can't do on a laptop and with an internal HD. I'd always have the laptop with the 4000 anyway

I'm working out whether I really need to spend the xtra $$$$ on an internal CDR or whether maxing out the RAM and getting an 80gig HD in there would be a better investment

From your post it sounds like you are going to buy the MPC4000LE.

I installed the extra 256 MB right from day one. 512 MB is overkill. Save your money on that accessory. You can add more RAM later if you really need it. The base 256 MB is a huge amount of memory compared to the amount in the older MPCs. Don't be influenced by the "more is always better" attitude in this case. If you use software to convert Audio files to WAV files, then you can probably omit the CDR too.

yeah, its the one they sell in the UK with nothing on it. Thanks for the RAM advice, I'm sure 256 will keep me busy, but I'd just have got 512 automatically if you hadn't raised it! I think I'll get the analog outputs and a big HD...

do you use an internal HD? Some folks complain because they are too noisy, but it seems a better way of storing everything to me

I don't really understand the connection between the laptop and the 4000, what is possible and what isn't but I guess I'll figure it all out when I've got one in front of me

The internal HDD in the 4ooo is a damn site quieter than a pc or mac buzzing away in the corner.

Also, if you omit the CD drive, then you can install a hush kit on the 4ooo's internal hard disk - check www.quietpc.co.uk for the details.

interesting - do you use one? Surely its only the HD sleeve bit which is relevant to the MPC?

my "specialist audio" laptop sounds like a friggin jet taking off... most annoying

Yes, just the HDD sleeve, but I presumed you would get that impression from looking at the site

No I don't use one in my MPC4ooo, because I only use the '4ooo for live work where ambient noise isn't really a porblem - however, I do have a hush kit installed on my desktop and it works unbelivably well!

Does anybody know if it is possible to save just one program with samples to the CDRW? And then save multiple sessions after that?

Is this possible? In what way? 4k recognizes the audio cd, but it cant play it!

yes, go to record and choose internal analog....then play your cd

thats because your cd isnt connected with the audio cable...(same as on a pc) u need to connect it, analog or digital if you got the digital option installed.

PROS:

- sampling audio cds
- reading akai s1000/3000 and other sample CD formats
- backing up projects/ sounds/ programs etcetera...


CONS:

- when cd drive is connected, room for only 1 internal IDE hard disk is available
- slower entering of load screen when cd is inserted
- you need the optional spdif board to make audio cds sound topnotch (according to my buddy Feline1 )



.... Personally I prefer a cd-drive instead of two hard disks...

In what way i can play this cd? Is there a start-stop menu? Like the mpc 2500? I find no such menu. I insert an audio cd, it recognises it as audio, but no sound!

just press PLAY
you control the disc with the transport buttons
the mpc4000 is a 3000 dollar cd player too you know
