New Floppy Drive Questions

I finally decided 2 replace my floppy drive on my 60 since it has been giving me so many errors when loading. I ordered it 2day and it should arrive 2morrow or Friday. Then I will R&R the old 1... simple, right? My question is whether I will be able 2 use HD disks with the new drive instead of the DSDD disks? Somebody explained on here that even if the floppy drive is 1.44 MB, u should still use the DSDD disks b/c u have 2 write the info harder on the DSDD disks and the info will go faster if u use HD disks. I should dig up the thread where dude explains it. Anybody who has a 1.44 MB drive in their 60 please put me up on your experience. I'm sure I'll have more questions when I actually receive and put in the drive. -=uno=-

I don't know much about this stuff, but I would think the only concern would be the power supply draw if HD draws mpre. The drives have jumper settings to set it to 720k operation, I'm not sure if that is necessary to get it to work or not. But look into that.

Good look on the reply. I'll keep the power supply concerns in mind. However, I got the drive 2day and there r no jumpers! I got the FD-235HF drive that was listed in the FAQ. Or r the jumpers in the 60? Do they just not put jumpers on the drives anymore? If anybody knows the answer, please put me up on it b/c if I can't use this drive I want 2 return it as soon as possible. I haven't opened my 60 yet 2 see what the current drive looks like.

you need to get one with jumpers. hard from ebay photos.

I tried a non jumpered floppy in a friend's machine and it wouldn't boot with it in, something with the power goes through the floppy and the jumper needs to be set right. A busted floppy works better. but it didn't hurt the machine, so try it Nino, but don't be scared if it doesn't switch on.

i messed with an old sony floppy drive on my open mpc 60 , reboot every time i changed jumper position in order to find the right one and didn't brake anything . it finally worked !

Good looks on the replies yall. Well, after doing some research, it looks like my new floppy drive is 4 generations 2 late. The last series 2 have the jumper blocc was the 7XXX series. I'm not 2 scurred 2 try it but if I scratch it or something then I can't send it bacc, ya dig. The other thing is that I don't think it will work without the jumper. Something about the power supply needs the jumper, right? I'm gonna see if they have the 7 series (doubtful) and if not then I will try putting it in. I have an old computer and the drive in there may have the jumper blocc... now that I know what I'm looking 4. Peace yall. -uno-

I don;t think anything will break trying the floppy, but the only non jumpered floppy that I tried and the machine wouldn't start, floppy drives with the jumper block (and incorrect jumper settings) booted the machine even tho the floppy didn;t work.

Yo Pieuvre (how do you say that anyway? ) Did you post your jumper settings to the FAQ? if you could document them incase they are different or confrm the ones we have up there, posterity wil thank you.

the drive and jumpers settings are in the 60 Faq .I helped a guy yesterday here in france , and it works as far as i know .These floppy drives can be found in old korg gear ( 01w era ) .
Btw pieuvre is almost impossible to say for an english speaking person ( it means octopuss in french , can you figure running all your gear at the same time with tentacles ? )

Well the floppy drive saga continues... and as the euros say 'no joy'. Looks like none of the drives I have will work now. On the new drive I got the green (busy) light 2 come on but the drive wouldn't make contact with the disk. I kept getting the "There is no floppy in the drive" error that I have become so accustomed 2 seeing. The old computer drive doesn't work anymore and my current drive (a 1990 Mitsubishi MF353C-112MA) seems 2 not want 2 work anymore either but at least it makes contact with the disk.

I called VST and Dave said a new floppy is gonna be $160. I told him that I was having trouble finding the floppy drives with the jumper blocc. His response concerned me though b/c he said the 60 uses a proprietary format and made it sound like it's more than jumper settings. But that's not true is it? If VST can find drives, then I should be able 2 buy from their supplier as well, na mean.

So until I can find a working drive... it looks like I'm gonna have 2 go Andreas and quit saving my sh!t If somebody has a spare drive, hit me on the PM. -uno-

Theres probably mad drives that work we just don't know about them. This would be a good place to list working and non-working drives. Anytime somebodys floppy goes out they should make a list of which ones did'nt work and which one did. Eventually this might be easy to take care of.
